GT programs in Howard County

Anonymous
Can anyone share insight in how Howard County supports GT learners? I have consistently 99 percentile kids in mid elementary school. Any insights on how it compares to the various enrichment programs in Montgomery County? Does the in school model really work and are kids appropriately challenged? I like how Howard approaches equity but also need to make sure supports for my kids are available.

Almost all of the GT programming is done within your home school. In Elementary, GT teachers run several pull out groups (I think starting in 1st grade). They visit each class and "talent search" selecting kids who express interest. GT math starts in 4th grade and is 2 years ahead, 1 year math starts in 3rd. All kids in the school are tested, admission is by test, but parents can and do override placements.

Things get better in MS, GT class are available in English, Math , SS and Science. Sixth grade GT students can also take GT research where each student selects a research project and present it at the end of the year. Each MS has at least one GT teacher who in addition to teaching GT research does clubs and outreach depending on students interest, book clubs, debate, MathCount, etc.

HS GT classes and then AP and duel enrollment. Math beyond Calc C includes Diff E, Linear Algebra and Discrete Math. Each school has their own flavor.

There is one advanced math program at the CC for kids in elementary school who are 3 years ahead in math, students have to be selected by GT math teacher. However, some kids test ahead to 3 years ahead in HS (each school has their own policies) or takes math in summer school. Recently summer school math for advancement purposes has not been allowed.

Howard county has no magnets or highly gifted programs.

In my experience the GT model doesn't work very well in elementary, but does in MS and HS. You child will be prepared for the work at a highly selective college.
