Does anyone have any idea how many applicants each of the above schools receive? I am looking for K at all schools but pre-k at Primary Day.
Just trying to figure out my daughters odds. Good playdates - I think, 98% full scale, good teacher recs but has a minor speech issue and is getting help. Thoughts? |
| I heard Sidwell has 900 applicants, not sure if this is true or not. There were 100 kids at each playdate, so if anyone knows how many playdates they had... |
| 100 kids at each playdate? How many kids were in each group? I hope that 100 kids was over the course of an entire day b/c if not, I can see how it could be as chaotic as everyone says. |

Just curious--why would you be considering PreK for one school but not the others? I'm assuming that means your child has a summer birthday? Did Primary Day tell you to only apply to PreK? Do they have a different cutoff? Don't know if this pertains to your situation, but a couple of friends of mine a few years ago applied to Concord Hill for K and didn't get in, but were offered spots in PreK instead. You might ask them if that is an option, if you'd be willing.
|
| Number of applicants is important, but so is the number of spots available for those who are neither sibling nor alum. Is your DC either? If not, then the real numbers you want to know are how many applicants for those remaining spots. |
|
This may be completely irrelevant since I have no information about K, but a friend told me that Concord Hill has tons of sibling applicants this year for both the 3-year-old program and the PreK program.

| Look at the third edition of Georgia Irvin's book. It should have updated application numbers for the school (though obviously not by grade). |
| Following up on 13.50's post: I recall seeing about 80 parents and possibly about 40-50 kids on a single playdate for for both pre-K and K when we were there. The room was full so I imagine that this was about max capacity for a single day. Counting about 10 weekends in the Fall, this adds up to 500 kids total and 250 each for for pre-K and K. Given about 20 slots per class, I guess this is roughly consistent with the 1/10 to 1/15 acceptance statistics that are commonly discussed on this board. |
| They had a playdate with 40-50 kids all at once in one room! That is crazy! How long are the kids there for? What do they do during that time? Do the admissions people pull kids aside one by one? My kid would've been beside himself in all of that mess. |
| No, there were a total of 40-50 kids and I think they ended up with the kids being distributed into about 4/5 rooms. |
|
And the kids were there for an hour to an hour and a half. The rooms they were regular class rooms and going in they were each allowed to find whatever they wanted - the arts table, blocks etc. Not too sure as to what happened after that. Our DC didn't say too much other than that she had had fun.

| PP here again: my 40-50 number is a very casual estimate. I could not say for sure if the number was over 30-35. |
| Op here. Prek at primary day because she is a august bday and their prek is really like K. I am concerned that she won't get in anywhere and we will be scrambling to find a place! |
| Did anyone else hear that there are a ton of siblings applying for pre-k at Concord Hill? Are they one of the schools that are "family schools" meaning that all siblings get in? |
I'm a Concord Hill parent. I have no official admissions info, but right off the top of my head I can think of lots of siblings (definitely more than five that I can think of--maybe around seven or eight?) applying for Pre-Primary (what the nursery program is called); this just among the families I happen to know, so there may of course be more that I don't know about. For Primary (the PreK year), I personally know three siblings applying, and again, there may be more that I don't happen to know. They typically expand from 12 to 18 students from Pre-Primary to Primary, so there are usually around six openings, and there might be more if someone doesn't return. For K, there would only be around two openings if everyone returns (expands from 18 to 20, sometimes 21), but often there are a few kids who don't return from Primary to K (go to public school, move, etc.), so in that case there would be more openings. I want to say that back the year our oldest was entering K, there were something like 4-5 new students, something like that. They do have a strong sibling policy, which means that normally all siblings have a strong priority (not a guarantee though) unless there is a compelling reason not to admit the child. Occasionally a sibling is asked to wait a year, though. HTH. We love CHS and I hope you get admitted! |
