White House Nannies/College Nannies cost

Anonymous
We're moving to the area soon and starting to search for a nanny. I've never used a nanny placement service before, can someone tell me the approximate cost for services like White House Nannies? We have 2 boys, DS1 will be starting K in the fall and DS2 will be in part-time preschool 3 days/week but we're willing to pay for a FT nanny. Just trying to budget appropriately!

Nevermind - I found info on their rates page (which for some reason I couldn't find before...).

But if anyone has any first-hand budget info they'd like to share please do! Thanks!

Visit the nanny forum and do a search for White House Nannies. They don’t have a good reputation.

Where will you be living? I'd join your neighborhood listserv and find a nanny that way. Lots of turnover as kids start school.

I would budget $20/hour for first 40 hours then $30/hour over 40 per week.

Agree for that price you’ll get an average nanny. It really depends on your expectations and budget. Most of the better nannies in the DC area are getting $25 - $30. But White House stays with your lower paid nannies. Most of your cash goes to the agency owner.

Don't listen to this person. At $20/hr with 40 hours guaranteed, you'll have a great pool of nannies to select from. They maybe not have a masters in "whatever" but you'll be able to find a caring nanny that shows up on time and takes her job seriously.

We’ve only used White House nannies for backup care and they have seemed good, but it is a different beast.

The issue you are ignoring is that if you pay $20 through WH nannies, only part of that is being paid to the nanny. Some goes to the agency. So the nanny is getting less than if you found and paid her directly. How much that affects quality will depend, but presumably people who are able to command more from going independent will often do so.

Actually, that’s entirely wrong. With WH you pay the nanny directly—whether she’s a full time or temporary nanny. WHNs then hits your credit card directly for its additional placement.
