Going to gym with stiff neck

Anonymous
I woke up with a stiff neck. Took Advil and have been icing it. Today I’m supposed to lift weights and I do the elliptical. I’m thinking of not going because hasn’t gotten any better since I woke up. But I’m thinking if it does feel better later in the day that I can go. Anyone. Experience this before? Advice? Thoughts?

Stressed? Look at that first, and do whatever is relaxing for you.

I think it’s from sleep. This hasn’t happened to me in years. I’m relaxing by icing my neck and laying down and watching some tv. That usually helps relief stress

I wouldn’t workout with any injuries or stiffness.

Especially as we age, or over 30.

I occasionally wake up with a stiff neck or an aching shoulder or back. I wouldn't lift with it but definitely run with that regularly. I woke up with a stiff neck this morning and ran and did pushups.

Check out the Miranda White Aging Backwards exercises on YouTube. These exercises work wonders.

I am very cautious about exercising with pain, but my one exception is for neck & back pain, which improvement with movement. Usually gentle exercise actually helps a lot. But, you have to discern whether the neck/back pain was actually caused by your workouts ... in which case, don't do that movement!

However, I'm not a big lifter, so I'm not totally sure about lifting. But I think you'll be OK if you focus on whole body and lower body moves, and don't do anything that loads the neck at all.

Just doing the elliptical and a bit of yoga might be a better bet ...

I would push right on through that. It will go away soon enough

Isn't ice usually for injuries where there is inflammation? Heat may be better for relaxing your muscles.

In my experience, doing cardio will improve circulation and help a still neck.
