Fun candy to bring to kids in Europe

Anonymous
We are visiting DH's family in Europe for the holidays. What fun American candy can I bring for elementary/middle school kids that they don't have over there? I'm thinking maybe gummy worms and reeces peanut butter cups... any other ideas?

They have gummy worms (Trolli and Haribo). Resee cups are great because they don't have them. They also don't have jelly beans, so some jelly bellies would be really fun for the kids. Hershey kisses they also don't have (but I'm personally a chocolate snob and would pick Belgian chocolate over American any day--their trash chocolate is better than our good stuff for the most part).

Chocolate chip cookies are good, too. (They have Oreos)

Try some of the weirder Willy Wonka stuff...the names are currently escaping me...Nerds, some of those things. By and large the candy and chocolates in Europe are better, so it's a little tricky. Or go to a good Asian market and buy Japanese candy--they pretty much top everyones, and that's hard to get in Europe (or at least in Northern Europe, I don't spend much time in the south).

I would bring Jolly Ranchers, gummy bears, Twizzlers, etc. Stay away completely from Chocolate, where it's just a no win proposition.

FYI, not only do they have gummy worms, they (specifically the Germans) are the ones who invented it in the first place.

Root Beer is very American, so try those little A&W root beer hard candies. But don't be surprised when/if nobody likes it.....

OP, might help if you specify the country...saying "Europe" leaves it kind of open--the Swedes don't like the same things as the Greeks...

Pop Rocks, candy corn, Pixie Stix, anything peanut butter-based... Maybe even fruit roll-ups.

Agree with those who pointed out the futility of trying to impress with chocolate and/or gummi products.

I forgot about gummy bears coming from Germany.

Yes, I would get taffy products like Air Heads (my 11 year old boy and all his friends seem gaga over them). And pop rocks sounds good too.

Bring toys instead of candy. On the former, the US has a huge variety and at least compared to some European countries much better prices. On the latter, I second the views of previous posts that candy is better in Europe.

I lived in Belgium and got super sick of their chocolate. It is really good but I probably ate it nearly everyday. It is everywhere! So when my mom came to visit, she brought Hershey's chocolate kisses, bars, etc and I was in heaven. Same thing when I was in the UK. I hated most of Cadbury's chocolate so I loved getting Hershey's stuff. I hated Smarties (I think that's what they call M & Ms in the UK) so real M & Ms were great for my friends to bring over.

Yes, but you were an American living in Europe, right? OP is bringing American stuff to Europeans. I'm German, and have never gotten used to the taste of Hersheys...no matter how bad the PMS, it's never bad enough for Hersheys...

I have to haul Smarties back here from duty free shops around the world, as my kids prefer them to M&Ms...I think it just depends on what you're raised on.

Pop rocks, great idea, PP. THey're weird, will appeal to kids for sure! Also, candy canes are pretty American.

I agree. As a European Hershey's would make a very bad present. US "chocolate" is horrid. And as for all the Haribo suggestions, that would be coals to Newcastle.

How about marshmallows, taffy, or licorice?

How about Cracker Jack?

Marshmallows, great idea. I was trying to think of the German word for it the other day, and realized there isn't one...because they dont' have it. Licorice is made by Haribo in many different varieties. Saltwater taffy is also a good one.
