We use to live in NY and - don't get upset with me - but DC just does not compare. But, I have to think there are some options out there. Not looking for anything snooty or formal - just relaxed 'regular: dining. What are your favorite restaurants in DC proper? |
In the Penn Quarter (Chinatown):
Oyamel Zaytina Proof Chinatown is my "work" neighborhood, and these are my favorites. I used to live on U street, and that scene is booming. . .worth checking out. Others who live there, chime in. There is a great French restaurant in Woodley, but the name escapes me. (the wine was spectacular, perhaps why I can't remember the name.) I lived/worked in NYC, and don't think the DC restaurant scene is lacking by comparison. |
I agree about the DC food scene. But I like Vidalia's food for special occasions. Bistro Lepic in upper Georgetown for French food. If 20:04 is referring to Petit Plats as the French place, I'd be careful about going there since I've had a couple of really bad meals there and will never go back. |
I love Bistro Lepic too, though I like it much more now that I've lived in Georgetown for many years, and I know a lot of the other diners. It's a comfy neighborhood type of place.
I love Marcel's too. I've had a lot of fun at Bourbon (you can eat at the bar) and at Cafe Milano, which is a classic. Again, it's much more fun if you go sort of regularly and know other diners. I wish I could recommend some new, fun restaurants, but I have three young kids at home and stick to my neighborhood. I'm interested in seeing other recommendations. Also, ps: I HATE Vidalia, and I brought some fellow New Yorkers there, and they completely made fun of everything. Just fyi. |
Komi, but be prepared for a marathon meal that takes well over 2 hours. I think it is # 1 on the Washingtonian list this year. Definitely agree that NY has it over DC for dining. |
petit plats is the french restaurant in woodley |
And the only thing "spectacular" about it is how bad it is. |
I'm sure Cafe Milano is fun - but the food is terrible, and even if it were good, it would be ridiculously overpriced. |
It's silly to try and compare DC and NY, but there are a ton of good restaurants (including Komi, Central, and Oyamel). |
I like Central, Bibiana, Tosca, CityZen, Bourbon Steak downtown.
Try to venture out a little - go to Ray's the Steaks, Ray's Classics I like Zola's Mac n Cheese. I also like Indique and Rasika for Indian. Indique Heights got a big thumbs up from my Indian cabbie a few weeks ago. |
I really like Ardeo near the Uptown theater. I also love Guapos. And I like Heritage for Indian. |
Montmartre on Capitol Hill is a great neighborhood restaurant. Very good food but not so expensive that you can't go on a weeknight. |
I like Wolfgang Puck's restaurant at the Newsmuseum.....Source.

Dino in Cleveland Park is another relatively casual/less expensive but very good restaurant. |
Another vote for Montmartre. Consistently good. |
