HCG levels and singleton versus twin?

Anonymous
If I had my blood tested at 19 DPO and it was about 2,600 HCG - could that mean twins? Anyone willing to share levels? I haven't had a sono yet and am really hoping this little apple sticks. Thanks in advance.

I think my levels were around 1100 but I'm not sure. I think they double ever 48 hours in the beginning. It would be neat to see studies of levels in twins versus singletons. Good luck to you!

I don't know my exact numbers for DS. I just remember the doctors saying that things seemed okay and feeling relieved at ultrasounds.

my betas at 18dpo (following 2 SG IVF cycles) were 900 for a singleton and 3100 for twins. However, betas are notorious for not correlating with number of fetuses.

However, it would seem that yours is quite high and could very well be indicative of multiples esp. if you did IVF or IUI and have a high chance of having more than one embryo implant.

check out betabase.com for a survey of beta values by day of conception and number of babies.

OP here. Thanks for the responses. I'll definitely check out the beta website!

OP again. I had no idea a website like betabase.info even existed. Thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for and hoping women would share through this thread but the website is wonderful. It says the median HCG level for single pregnancies is 598 and for twin pregnancies it is 1167. So, we'll see. The 2600 HCG level may not necessarily mean twins b/c based on what I read - the levels vary so much. Thanks again for the responses/information.

Just one more chiming in....my levels at my 1st blood test after 2ww was 1750. We have twins. If you do find out you are having twins find your local Parents of Mulitples Club and join. Its a great support network. You'll meet a zillion graduates of TTC in the club too. Congratulations!

OP again. THANK YOU to everyone that has responded. I am wondering if it's twins - you never know. I am CERTAIN that ovulation occurred on August 1 and the bloodwork was drawn on August 20th and it was over 2600. We will see. My first sono is next Friday but it is early - will be 7 weeks on 9/5/09 so I'm not sure how much they will see. I realize that betas can run the whole gamut but it is neat to the think it could be twins.

My beta was 13,000 at 4 weeks. This level was supposedly so high that the doc told me to come in right away for an u/s. The radiologist looked at us with a straight face and said: " No wonder your levels are so high...you have TWO in there!" Sure enough, two "bubbles" (gest sacs) on the u/s screen. We now have healthy 10 mo. boy/girl twins

PP - wow! 13,000! That is incredibly high. I'm glad that everything turned out okay and that the levels were so high because of twins. That makes the ~2600 look like nothing. The ranges really run the gamut. What seems high and make indicate multiples can be a single, and vice versa. I guess it's just one other thing that some of us wonder about and hope that all is okay about (are my levels okay, are they too high/too low/just right)? So much to worry about!

OP - one thing to think about is how far along you are. Weeks are counted since the start of your last period with the assumption that the start of your period to O day is 14 days. So at 19 dpo you are medically counted as 33 days along IF O occurred 14 days after the beginning of your LMP. I realize this gets a little tricky so folks, correct me if I'm wrong so I'm not providing incorrect info to OP and others. Good luck.

I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant with boy/girl twins. Here were my BETA's:

16dpo - 661
18dpo - 1358
20dpo - 2546

PP - CONGRATULATIONS on your twin pregnancy! One of each is so exciting! Did you have any symptoms that you might be carrying twins before ultrasound confirmed?

My betas were no where near that high and I am 32 weeks along with twins!

OP here. One more week until ultrasound. I'm curious if it's twins but will post back with results either way. The range is so wide that #'s for a twin pregnancy are also seen in single pregnancies.
