Anyone use those fake shampoo/sunscreen bottles to bring alcohol on a cruise?

Last cruise they were inspecting SEALS on bottles (and I am not over 50 and was travelling in a suite with my kids so don't think I looked suspicious!)

Are you the same people who drink on the sidelines at your kid's baseball game?

Klassy.

This.

Wait, really? They’ll allow you to bring all the booze you wish onboard?

Buy a la carte -- unless you are planning on doing a lot of drinking.

Enjoy! We went on our first cruise a couple of years ago and we were super worried it wouldn't be fun. Most relaxing vacation I've ever taken.

I hope you have a wonderful time!

This has nothing to do with OP's original question but it's making me think of my late mom, who many years ago went on a tour of Iran - where you're not supposed to be drinking alcohol at all. People had told her to put her booze in a Scope bottle and put blue food coloring in it. She eventually decided not to bring alcohol at all. I always wonder how that went, given that later I realized that she was on her way to alcoholism, if she wasn't already there. Must have been hard for her to go without.

Anyway, like I said, this doesn't relate to what OP asked. Just a little detour down memory lane. Sorry!

It would take a lot of alcohol to get me to enjoy a cruise.

OP here. Yeah, this is kind of where I"m coming from.

You all are harsh. I've never been on a cruise, hate the idea of it, trying to suck it up for my in-laws, for whom this will be their last vacation. They've moved into assisted living and are in failing health. This will be their last hurrah, and neither my husband nor I are cruise people and not exactly looking forward to that portion of it. But we're happy to spend the time with them.

From my friends who do cruise they say "oh, everyone sneaks it on." Then I saw this on the neighborhood listserv and thought, well, hell, with such a market for these products, people must really sneak stuff on I guess.

I guess not, based on what I'm hearing here. No, we are not alcoholics, which is why there is no hell way we're paying $2,000+ for alcohol. Yes, that's their policy - this is on Norwegian Cruise lines, and since my in-laws made all of the reservations, we would all be required to purchase. But I'm unapologetic that if I have to endure this cruise, I might as well drink.

It's not "necessary" but it's vacation and a la carte it is. (I do see they allow wine, but that's all they allow you take on board. Not even water.)

Thanks for the reality check. You can all go about your day now.

this is way long overdue, but you don't owe these idiots an answer. Tons of people do do it. I hope you did and enjoyed yourself.

My sister used to do this and it worked pretty well. I don’t bother because I don’t really want to do cocktails in the room — it’s a pain. If I’m going to drink I’m going to do it at the pool or at the club and just pay the $15 for the drink.

RC lets you bring on two bottles of wine per adult. Put them in your carry-on so they can count them at check-in.

Apart from that, we just buy a la carte. But we aren’t big drinkers, and “pregaming” doesn’t appeal to us. Do the math to figure out if the liquor package is for you.

I don’t get the appeal of cruises let alone spending $2K on a booze package. These fake bottles just prove my point. You’re a captured audience on a prepackaged, preplanned floating germ incubator. The pools are overcrowded, there’s never enough lounge chairs (and people throw a towel on them at 4 AM to “claim” them), etc. But hey the more of you on cruise ships, the less of you at the really nice hidden gems I vacation to. To each their own.

Consider not drinking.

This post is from 2019. Doubt OP needs anyone's advice now.

If you’re going to go on vacation, go on vacation. Smuggling vodka and furtively mixing drinks sounds so stupid. Either you can afford to go on vacation, or you can’t.
