Nope. It's nationally known.

NP - Sorry but it's not true. I am from CA and I don't recall people discussing UVa when discussing top tier schools at all. Michigan, yes, UVa, no.

People who know colleges, don't care about ranking. Do you even know what criteria are used to come up with the rankings? Yeah, I didn't think so.

This talk about ranking and whether VA kids have an advantage of the MD kids is ridiculous. The answer is no. If your child is a good student, she will do well wherever she goes and will get into a great graduate school. Don't get caught up in this "rankings" bs, because that is what it is-- a bunch of bs. I met at least 10 kids at Maryland who chose to go to Maryland over UVA because they received scholarships to MD and not to UVA. These kids were brilliant. MD is an excellent school. Kids are dying to get into Maryland from many many states. It is a hot school and you have nothing to worry about by sending your child there.

I also attended the graduation and a good portion of the speakers, including Wallace Loh, mentioned they would not have been accepted if they applied today. My DS loved every minute a UMCP, a great value.

UMD

Fall 2015 admitted freshman profile:
GPA: 4.22
SAT middle 50%: 1260-1420
ACT middle 50%: 29-33

They use MCPS grading system for wGPA.

So that average GPA is weighted?

What are DC's chances?:

3.98 GPA weighted
MCPS magnet program
SATs 1600

Is 1600 M&R only? UMD only considers Math and Reading portion.

Yes, Math & Critical Reading only.

How come wGPA of only 3.98? That means your DC is getting almost all Bs, given your DC is a magnet student, right?

^ and yes, I think your DC will be admitted to UMD. Whether DC will be a direct admit to UMD limited enrollment program (LEP) program, I don't know. What major?

I think the only criteria that matter are the ones YOU care about. Who cares if a school ranks high based on criteria that you couldn't careless?

LEP = Honors or Scholars?

Major undecided.

Thanks.

FWIW - popular perception around the DMV favors UVa over UMd in terms of "prestige", but this thread taught me a lot I didn't know. What about St Mary's College? How is that seen + what is the reality?

The argument of UMD vs UVa (or UNC) always follows predictable path - UVa (or UNC) supporters pointing to its ranking UMD supports pointing to its products/alum.

I give credits to UVa and UNC for playing the rankings game better than UMD. Just like NEU has done past 10 years or so. But under the ranking, there isn't much to show.
