So FSAFeds has just switched to a new company managing and administering the plan (called WageWorks). The switch happened in August and up to that point I could always get easily reimbursed for over-the-counter prenatal vitamins without a prescription. In the old system earlier in 2016 they were considered an eligible expense with no doctor's prescription required. But now the new company is saying they are considered a regular over-the-counter supplement/vitamin and you need to get a prescription to get reimbursed.
Is this right? Can the new company managing the plan make a new policy in the middle of the benefit period that they are only reimbursable under certain circumstances? I would think that the plan is what it is for the entire year and the policies about what's "eligible" can only change at the open season. I called and complained but am wondering what else to do. It's a pain and honestly a bit unfair to have to get a prescription for prenatals! |
| Not with fsa Feds but I have trouble getting prenatals reimbursed as well. I have a credit card and everything else works for the credit card but not those pills. It's weird! |
| I don't get reimbursed for any non-prescription drugs or supplements, including prenatals. Pretty sure that is in the regs that only prescriptions are reimbursable. Sounds like the previous provider was incorrectly letting you get reimbursed. |
Yeah, I always needed a scrip to get reimbursed for prenatals. But you can just get a scrip and then get reimbursed for over-the-counter purchases. The scrip is just to justify the purchase as medically necessary; the prenatals don't have to be "prescription" prenatals per se. Does that make sense? (Same applies to like tylenol, FYI). |
