| My child was accepted to Stanford, UCLA and is offered a full ride to study Biology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). I am thrilled for her and am willing to pay the costs for Stanford or UCLA, but DC is leaning to the full ride at UMBC. Is she making a a mistake? How do I persuade her that she should take Stanford? |
| Can you afford Stanford? If so, do it. |
| Yeah I would do Stanford, no question, even if it means loans. |
| Another vote for Stanford |
|
well... Stanford is awfully good. Normally I am not impressed by expensive private schools, but I make an exception here.
But, if she got a full ride at UMBC, and got into Stanford, surely she could get a full ride at some nicer school as well? |
| I'd do Stanford if you can afford it. UCLA? Nope. |
| Why Stanford for biology over UMBC full ride? I understand UMBC is very well regarded for its science programs. |
| DS is st Stsnford and its amazing. Can you take her to visit? |
| You can't actually be serious? |
|
I am serious. Why take on tremendous debt for Stanford when you can be just as more successful than your Stanford peers?

| My husband went to Stanford and I went to umbc. We have the same job... |
You said you could pay for it. You didn't mention that you would have to take on tremendous debt to do it. If you need to take on tremendous debt and have no college savings then didn't your DD qualify for need based aid from Stanford? |
| Not sure if I believe OP. What scholarship did your DC get from UMBC? Also, what did UMDCP offer assuming your DC applied there too. |
Congrats to your daughter. I know you say you would pay for Stanford, but what does that mean.? If your daughter is looking at medschool one day and you will be tapped out after Stanford, maybe the scholarship is the better choice. If you will be paying your parent plus loans until you are seventy, I'd think hard about Stanford. All that said, if you canoeing it without closing future doors or ruining your own future, go for Stanford. |
