Vern Williams Leaving Longfellow?

Anonymous
Okay, knowledgeable Longfellow parents... I heard from a friend that the legendary Vern Williams (math teacher extraordinaire) will be leaving Longfellow Middle School next fall in order to teach at Basis Independent of McLean, a new private school. I have younger kids who will feed into Longfellow and were so excited to be part of a math department that has a wonderful reputation in large part because of Mr. Williams. Is this true?!?

Sounds correct -- he is listed on their website.

There are PLENTY of FABULOUS math teachers at Longfellow. It isn't just one person.

Good for him, fcps really screws teachers on their pay and I hope basis is paying him what he's worth!

He has more than enough years to retire from FCPS.

Retirement plus salary sounds great.
Plus Basis was having trouble attracting enough students to start in the fall, I wonder if getting teachers like Williams will help.

He's an old guy now.

$25K/year might have something to do with it, for a school with no pedigree.

I saw at his picture; he looks great for an "old guy".

It's not a recent picture. He has been a teacher over 40 years.

It's a huge loss for Longfellow. I wish he would stay.

As for being an "old guy", he doesn't teach like a tired teacher. The kids love him and, as a response to an irrelevant comment, he doesn't look anywhere close to his age.

It will be a loss, but not a huge loss, there are many excellent math teachers at Longfellow. For the AAP crowd, the biggest impact will be the halving of the AAP program when the Cooper zoned students go to Cooper.

The Cooper AAP students account for well under half of the total AAP enrollment at each of Longfellow and Kilmer. Their presence did contribute to overcrowding at both schools.

Okay, Isaid half because when my boys attended it seemed about half were from Cooper and half were from Longfellow. My opinion still stands, the Cooper students going to Cooper will have a greater impact on the AAP program than Mr. Williams departure. The reduction in overcrowding will be beneficial for all.
