High Point University

What do you guys know about this place?

I haven't heard of it. But from what I recall from my college days, the name alone suggests a great time will be had by all!

Known for being a back-up or slack school for kids from out of state.

Don't know one single person who WANTED to go there from the area; god-awful expensive for a marginal education. Attractive because of some new, expensive facilities, dorms, etc.

Oh, and High Point is a terrible town. See other posts regarding Elon (has better academics) but the city of HP is about the same as Burlington. Old, small, industrial towns where the major businesses have left. Not cool or recolonized by hipsters yet.

I was heavily targeted/recruited by them when I was in HS. Not sure why. But, seriously, weekly mailers. It was crazy.

Appalachian State also loved me.

I went to college in NC, but I wasn't from there. I attended a much better known school.

I've heard of it.. Most people from NC don't want to go there, but if they can't get into other schools, it's an option.

It's kinda like the bullis of colleges ... Dumb rich kids who couldn't get in anywhere else.

A two-fer double dig. Kool.

In my opinion High Point has intentionally decided that it's academic reputation is of no concern as long as students have a happy experience in an almost Disney-like environment where student comfort is the main focus.

I am not kidding but I know someone whose son went there and she blames the atmosphere for turning him into a rebel flag flying, tobacco chewing drunk.

That is so odd because it comes across to me as the Zoey 101 crowd not the tobacco chewing red neck crowd.

+1

I am from High Point, NC. Once all the business left, the city grew around the school becoming a typical college town. The HPU's institution it's fantastic. Top notch facilities and a they work very hard to provide a students the best college experience! The school has virtually no diversity and caters to white christian students who come from an affluent back grounds.

I agree with the PP, the academics are not there to make this school remotely competitive.

NC State, Duke and UNC are an hour away and Wake Forest is 30 mins away... these would be way better choices. If coming out of state I would nix NC State (my alma mater) pay in state tuition at State college in MD or Va.

Totally agree. The kids we know at Highpoint did not have great high school grades and their parents have the $$$$ to pay for a private college in a nice setting for their kids. That High Point's academics are a bit lagging, is almost expected: If these kids had gotten it to Wake Forest or Miami, that's where they be.

For better students the cost is generally comparable to in-state tuition due to their generous merit aid. DD applied, and financially it made a lot of sense, but she chose to go elsewhere.
