LOL of course FCPS is aware. Take a look at the threads on this page and you'll understand why this is a problem.

We have teacher trainees who haven’t passed the praxis yet and this will be going into the 3rd year next year. They aren’t doing this program anymore and are not hiring without praxis. But we have trainees still in their positions even with people being de-staffed across the county.

I am sure they are great teachers and they want it. But it’s unfair that I had to take that test to renew my license before I could get hired and they are safe in their job. And they aren’t allowed to do IEPs or have SPED so they are leaving a lot of work for the rest of the team.

We haven’t heard of de-staffs in years and we are both teachers

?? It happens at schools every year. There's a hiring freeze right now because they need to place all the de-staffs.

I agree with the other PP who said the Praxis should be required before you get hired. Virginia also quietly got rid of the VCLA requirement as of this summer. If you can't pass the VCLA you have no business writing IEPs, writing lesson plans, or teaching kids how to read and write.

There is a teacher shortage-you have a point but if we are being honest schools are in a tough place. Parents want to say no no not in FCPS....yes FCPS has a shortage.

It's so short-sighted of the county to move teachers around over small margins of students so that then the teacher teams need to start over, etc.

It's one of the many ways FCPS says we don't care-it's sad.

Anecdata but my DD graduated from FCPS in 2018 and many of her HS and college friends (females) became teachers-several in FCPS, several out of state and one Teach for America.

Of this group, only one is still teaching and she left after one year FCPS/ES to teach in Europe.

Teach for America friend is a corporate recruiter in NYC.

The only places that don’t have teacher shortages are states with strong unions, and some cities with a high amount students in charters or privates.

Teach for America’s goal isn’t to provide teachers, it’s to make influencers. People who “have classroom experience” but then move on to policy work.

Yep. They make you sign a 2 year commitment but then have a higher drop out rate after year 1 than those outside the program.

Our ES had an upper grade vacancy that was filled after winter break. They’ve been piecing together coverage for a special education IA for most of the school year and also a specials class. There is a long term sub in for a special education teacher and a lower grade classroom teacher.

Probably, but no guarantee at the same job/school if there was a gap in getting the Praxis result.
