updating an almond-colored bathroom

Anonymous
It's our guest bath and not used often, so I don't feel like sinking a ton of money gutting the bathroom. Right now, there is an almond colored tub and toilet, almond colored tile surround, and brownish faux slate tile. The walls are a medium beige and the light fixture is a faux tuscan thing with golden glass covers, so the room looks dark and yellowish. The sink counter is god-awful dark brown granite with graphic black veining and there is a black glass vessel sink. I hate the vessel sink deeply, so will definitely replace. I'd like to replace the sink granite as well, but perhaps it won't be so garish if we just remove the 6 inch splash-guard rim and cut a large hole in the granite to bottom-mount a large sink.

The most pressing issue is that we need to replace the toilet immediately. I'd like to replace with white, to match the rest of the house, but that would stand out like a sore thumb in this bath unless I was SURE we are going to re-do the whole thing. Should we replace with an almond colored toilet to match the tub? Is there any way to salvage an almond colored bathroom? Lighter paint? Better lighting?

Can you have the tub glazed to make it white, and then go with a white toilet? Definitely change the paint color to something more exciting, even if you're keeping the granite. Are you open to getting rid of the granite and going with something else, even if it's cheaper material? Change the glass covers for the light fixture (or replace the fixture with something more classic).

You could also post a picture of the bathroom on houzz.com and get people to opine about things you could do to change the room.

Black glass vessel sink sounds like my idea of hell. Let us know what you wind up doing and how it comes out!

Reglaze the tub and surrounding tile. Www.bathroommagic.net. We did this about 5 years ago to a pink tub and tile and it came out great. Still looks great after daily use. about$1k so a great deal.

Replace with white toilet.

New vanity and top from Loews or ikea= $250.

New floor tile 750? Max?

New light fixture 100

New shower curtain and paint and you are done.

Total about 2500.

Isnt reglaIng really toxic and stinky?

The first 2 days of reglazing are stinky, kind of like when you paint your house. Other than that, we haven't had a problem with it.

Don't get a cheap-o reglazing job. Went the budget route and it only lasted 2-3 years. Spent $500 and it's lasted for over 10 years without a blemish.

I would get a new white sink and new white toilet. Paint the walls white and add a white shower curtain, towels, etc. The more white you can put in the more it will brighten it up.

A new light fixture will help lessen the yellow glow the current one is shining on the room.

My next investment would be the countertop and then the flooring. A white bathmat can help with the flooring in the meantime.
