FYI the average GPA and SAT for honors college in 2022 were 4.65 and 1480-1560. Only 1000 spots. |
Now I know why my kid didn't get in! Too high on both accounts.
|
1,000 out of 5,000 class. Undergraduate enrollment is 31,000.

this was last year - also direct admit to Smith. 1500 SAT, 4.8 W (maybe 3.95 UW), 16 AP classes, ran 6 figures (revenue) small business selling on ebays etc. |
UMD costs less. UMD is more diverse, which matters to many people. All sorts of reasons |
The wonderful thing about college selection is it's based on your personal decisions. It's up to the student and family to decide how and where they will end up. Thankfully decision day is not determined by a vote from DCUM. I can't even imagine where my student would have ended up if I had listened to have of the opinions on this forum. |

Bump this thread-
Does UMD consider major when determining Honors and Scholars ie they don't want everyone in their programs to be CS majors? What stats does one need IS to get Honors as an engineering student? |
"Invitations to the Honors College are extended to new first-year students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and promise. Students’ applications are carefully evaluated on the basis of academic achievement in high school, rigor of high school program, application essays, letters of recommendation, participation in extracurricular activities and standardized test scores. Please note, UMD is currently test-optional. Applicants have the option of choosing whether to submit an SAT/ACT score and whether those scores will be considered in the review of their application for admission. If students choose not to submit test scores, they will still be fully evaluated for admission, invitation to Honors and considered for all merit scholarships. " |

It’s all top notch students. A lot of the honors students go on to graduate school at an Ivy. |
Anecdotally, it is harder to get in as CS major. I know of several magnet CS kids last year with 1580+ and near perfect GPAs, good ECs not selected for honors. |
|
He did nothing wrong.
Not everyone gets in. It’s highly selective, and there are not enough spots. It could be too many with his major were already accepted or they wanted a banjo player or someone with XYZ award or experience. UMD is not a safety. |
It’s laughable when you are rich like you. But—this may shock you—not everyone can afford an Ivy, and they can still be an excellent student. |
My kid chose Cornell over UMD Honors (with lots of merit). I would have gone UMD. UMD is rated very well for CS. Yes it is below Cornell but not enough to matter. |
Congrats!! Direct admit for CS at UMD is a huge deal! |
