So is the Walls cut-off this year a 4.0?

Competition for Walls is going to get so much worse once Hardy has to go to Macarthur.

I'd think it would decrease some. Why do you think so?

Anonymous wrote:It's a little weird, but DCPS doesn't calculate GPAs for middle schools. You can use the same scale that high schools do to calculate it (like a B- is a 2.7), but DCPS does not calculate it for you (at all DCPS middle school). You won't find it in ASPEN.

It's normal. GPA is a high school thing. Pushing high school things down to middle school isn't neccessary.

Everything that has a grade is input into GPA.

Here is how they calculated GPA: https://enrolldcps.dc.gov/sites/dcpsenrollment/files/page_content/attachments/SWW%20GPA%20Scale_SY%2022-23%20Admissions%20Update%20FINAL.pdf

It doesn't make a difference a SWW since the cutoff was almost 4.0, but the footnote infuriates me.

*Note: In response to the COVID-19 health emergency DCPS has prioritized equity and rigor in our
grading policies to ensure all students are supported academically as they navigate the challenges of the
pandemic. For SY19-20, SY20-21, and SY21-22 DCPS has modified its grading policy so that students who
earn a “C” and/or “D” grade will see it displayed on their transcript as passing grades of “P,” indicating
that a student demonstrated proficiency in the course.

Homogenizing a C and D and pretending like both "demonstrated proficiency" illustrates the degree to which DCPS is just passing kids along in the system and setting them up for failure.

How is it equitable to have a grading policy - that was put in place to support children who had material challenges through COVID and then say - just kidding.

I doubt SWW expected the cut off to be at 4.0. If you look at the rubric, most of the score is for the interview, but there are a few points for GPA, according to a scale. Had they known that every kid would have a 4.0, and therefore get the exact same points in their score in the rubric, they wouldn't have bothered scoring GPA. This year (maybe last year too), the interview is the entire score.

It's not a 4.0..Think it's like 3.87. I doubt the cutoff will ever be a 4.0. Things will come back to normal and it will probably drop a little.

Point is the same - every interviewed student this year receives identical points for GPA (5 points if your GPA is 3.8 or above).

A grade of “D” demonstrates proficiency?

But also … does this mean if a student gets a C or a D, those grades are dropped out of calculating their GPA entirely? That’s how pass/fail classes worked at my college …

How is giving kids a grade they didn't earn "equity"? Wouldn't equity be providing support to help those kids earn a C (or better)?

Sample 7th grade report report card for DCPS:

Grade-level Math: D (shows up as "P")
Grade-level English: D
Grade-level Science: D
Grade-level Social Studies: D
Grade-level Foreign Language: D
Art: A
PE: A

For “equity” reasons, this student has a 4.0 GPA and receives an interview at Walls.

Sample 7th grade report card for DC charter school:

Advanced Math: 90% (A-)
Advanced English: 90% (A-)
Advanced Science: 90% (A-)
Advanced Social Studies: 90% (A-)
Advanced Foreign Language: 90% (A-)
Art: 98% (A)
PE: 98% (A)

This student receives no “equity” bump and has a 3.7 GPA and is denied an interview at Walls.

Does anyone really think that Walls is accepting the best and brightest in DC under the current admission system?

Are charter school D’s converted to a C+ or just DCPS schools?

Also this grade inflation is truly shameful. Talk about doing kids a disservice. HELP THEM if they’re getting D’s. Don’t just pretend it’s not happening.
