Alice, Caroline or Rose?

Anonymous
My daughter’s name is Alice. I think it’s a lovely name but I will warn you that everyone thinks she and I both are saying “Alex” when we introduce her. Also I didn’t realize how many similar names there are — Alyssa, Alison, Alicia, Elise, etc. She doesn’t actually have any kids with those names in her class. So maybe it’s irrelevant. But just things I hadn’t realized when I picked the name. Louisa and Helen were my back ups, if you’d like to add Helen to your list! We have a cat named Rose but I haven’t named anyone Caroline.

To me they all sound really, really dated and I'm an older woman.

Rose \ Rosie

Have you considered Josephine?

I mean you answered your own question there. Susan and Jennifer sound really, really dated to women having babies right now.

Hate them all.

+1, my mom thought all of our name choices sounded “dated”. She’s in her 60s. She doesn’t understand that I don’t have the same associations with names that she does. The names she likes all remind me of people I grew up with and sound too 90s to me.

Right. These names aren’t dated, if anything they are on the tail end of a trend (I don’t mean that in a bad way-I love all three names) before we have a bunch of Baby Susies and toddler Jennys. (Actually, as I write that I think it sounds pretty cute. I would love to meet a baby Amy or Nancy.)

They do sound dated and very Anglo. Might as well name her Karen.

They sound dated.

Np All these names have nothing to do with heavy metal. I think it is a you problem.

All three are fine, I just don't like Caroline as much, find it a bit too popular, and don't like that it can be pronounced two different ways.

That said, surname matters! Weird that you won't give any hints.

Pronounced two different ways in this country? This is news to me.

Yes, I personally know Carolines that pronounce it "-line" and "-lynne". Happy to provide the news; support my Patreon to keep local journalism alive.

That’s abnormal though, considering that Carolyn is an actual name.

Yep, the vast majority of Carolines pronounce it -line.

My daughter’s name is Madeline and 9/10 people pronounce it as Madelyn, so I started saying like Caroline and a few people have replied that they province that name as Carolyn… which is odd to me.

Same here. Rose especially seems very …. Generic. Alice old fashioned. Caroline is the classic. Caro line has more class than Caro Lynn but it’s still my first choice of the three.

Maybe Helena to go with Louisa

I think of Caroline as very generic - often seems like it’s everywhere, all three of my kids of different Carolines in each activity. A few Alice’s, and one of two Roses.

Funny, my dd has the opposite problem. She is Madeleine and people say Madel-line
