The final course grade is the average calculation of the four quarter grades.

there are also end of year exams.

It depends on the class. Some give 2/9 for each quarter and 1/9 for the final exam. For the quarter grades, it is a combination of tests, quizzes, projects, writing assignments (for English) and homework. Homework is never above 10%. Math tends to have more extra credit opportunities than other classes. Some give an extra 5 or 10 points to your final exam score if the student has a PA on the SOL, otherwise SOLs are not usually part of the grade. Some have a class participation grade- language courses tend to have these. Some tests are take home and done on the E-Cart system- science and history mainly.

The math department where I teach:

40% tests
30% Quizzes
20% Classwork/weekly problem sets
10% homework (completion)

The 4 quarters are averaged to get the final grade. In classes where there is a final (algebra/geometry), the final is worth "half a quarter" (so 1/9 of the year)

The SOL does not play into grades, except in high school credit classes. We were told by the county to add 5% to the students' final exam grades for a pass, 10% for a pass advance.

At least in FCPS it varies greatly by school and teacher. My child had one teacher who graded on test grades only, no credit for homework, no extra credit, and only a bump on the final exam grade if pass advanced on SOL. The other teacher that taught the exact same subject two doors down did give credit for homework, quizzes, extra credit, etc. Friends at other schools in the same course had different breakdowns also.

You won't know the formula that each teacher uses until back to school night.

Could you please tell me which county said to add 5% to the students' final exam grades for a pass, 10% for a pass advance ?

So if a student scored 80% on the Final exam her/his score will be 85% if the student is pass and 90% if the student is pass advanced ? Is this something new or has always been that way ? Which office in FCPS provides this instruction ?

The final exam is usually ~10% or 1/9th of the final grade,(depending on the class) so we are talking about a half point or point to the final grade for the class. I don't know which "Office" provided this instruction(?). I know that my rising senior has had it added to his grade for the past four years. So, at least four years. It is akin to giving extra credit. The only students it affects are those that are on the borderline between grades.

My DD , a rising 9th grade in FCPS did not get any additional pts to her final exam but she had a pass on SOL. It would have pushed her grade up as she was on the borderline between grade.
