Sorry the other thread was just too long. Let's start fresh.
Fact #1: There is an appeals process established. Following an established system means we are merely playing by the rules. Fact #2: There is no quota for FFX county AAP. Every child that is found eligible can be accepted. Parents who appeal are not taking slots from other kids. This thread is for discussion of scores, referral packets, your appeals plans, and other relevant info that can be helpful to others. Rules for this thread: Constructive discussions only. Please no snarkiness. Trolls please stay away. Examples of discussions/comments that are not helpful: -The AAP classroom is already over crowded. -Stop working the system -Your kid isn't smart enough Thank you and good luck everyone. Let's support each other in this thread. Agree?

| Well written - fingers crossed and hope this forum can continue to support this discussion in a positive way. |

Thank you for the post.
I have already posted in the older threat but here is the copy of it. My DC has a WISC of 147, GBRS 8 found not eligible. Planning to appeal, was wondering what kind of supporting docs is recommanded. |
What new information will you be providing other than possible work samples? |
| so far only work samples, but I wanted to know if anyone has anything else to recommand? |
| If you have not already submitted the optional parent questionnaire (???) I would submit it. Try to emphasize areas that were not scored as high on the GBRS with Commentary. |
| for work samples, I have her writing that she did in school. what else is useful? |
Any work samples that offer evidence that was not scored as highly on the GBRS with Commentary. |
| Was the WISC submitted along with the Cogat and NNAT or was this from a private school? |
| Can anyone confirm if GBRS will still be looked at in the Appeal file if submitted with WISC scores? Thanks |
| QUESTIONS!! A WISC of 147 would surely get the kid into the AAP in the past. It doesn't matter that the GBRS is 8. (You can see last year's post on successful appeal statistics.) So are there any hidden stories not told? Poor report cards or behavioral problems? Why did your child take the WISC at the first place? Most kids take it for appeal THIS MONTH. |
Agree. What was NNAT? What was CoGat (listed by sub-section)? What are report card grades? The committee is supposed to look at multiple factors when determining eligibility. |
We have moved to Fairfax County and did not have the other tests done and when applied were told is better to take WISC since nothing else was in the file. No behavioral issues, report card is also good. The one from last year was submitted with all high marks. The GBRS was 8 (all 2/4) but with great comments from the teacher. I did look at the other threats and appeal resuts from last year and was surprised to find out WISC 147 was in all cases had found eligible. Also, is there a rule to submit WISC only for appeal? Wouldn't make too much sense, but this like a pattern. Is there a reason for it? |
| So if you had no other tests could you get a CoGat done? Just wondering. I am not familiar with any tests...we just had NNAT and CoGat in our file. |
With no other test results and a GBRS of only 8, maybe the committee thought the kid had been prepped for the WISC. If you want to appeal this year, you should seriously consider paying for some additional testing to support the WISC results. The parent information packet lists what other tests are acceptable. Otherwise, wait until next year to do a parent referral, have FCPS administer the CogAT and NNAT this fall if he's in public school, and hope the GBRS is higher next spring. |
