How do I get a dog that was NOT picked to be a seeing eye dog?

Anonymous
Where I work there are some people that do the first year training for seeing eye dogs. they housebreak the puppy and teach it simple commands. These puppies are generally taught to be mellow (they are not given attention when they act excited, etc.). I know that not all of these puppies make it into the seeing eye program and I assume they are adopted out. How do I get on a list?

There is extremely high demand for these dogs - and they are usually first offered to the family that did the first year training if they fail out of the program. I would contact local organizations that do training (and search beyond seeing eye dogs - there are also programs to train dogs that help sense seizures, etc.) and ask about their adoption programs.

Thank you! I do not want a puppy as I do not have the time that they require in terms of training and I like the idea of a dog that has been conditioned to be mellow.

There are also dogs that have been trained by prisoners.

The Seeing Eye does not have puppy raiser placement in the DC area. Puppy raisers do not do the training. Puppy raisers are volunteer individuals and families. It is in Morristown NJ and puppies generally are raised from DE up to the NYC area. Some dogs do go to law enforcement agencies. I have seen dogs in training etc and it would be grossly unfair for one of these dogs to go to an individual who doesn't want to be bothered with the basics for Labs, Goldens and German Shepherds like housetraining etc.

I knew that someone would comment on my not wanting the trouble of a puppy! I have had my share of puppies over my life time as I have owned and taken care of dogs since I was a child. I am 50 and don't feel like housebreaking another puppy nor dealing with those sharp little puppy teeth. That does not mean I am a bad person and do not "deserve" a dog.

Have you tried local shelters? I don't have any direct experience, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are dogs available that are well-behaved and beyond the puppy stage. In fact, I think it's harder to find homes for those dogs.

I am over 50 and wrote that because there are many people who want those dogs. I have a great puppy and housebreaking is not hard. You deserve a dog but these are very special dogs. People your age work with them through week 8 until age 1.

No, but maybe you don't deserve a dog that has been pre-trained for you with no effort at all on your part.

Why can't someone who knows their limitations get a dog that fits their circumstances? Are the people who adopt dogs that require more training than they are able to provide more deserving in your point of view?

I posted at 17.27. NJ has now enacted Dusty's Law to protect guide dogs and guide dogs in training. Astonishingly 44% have been attacked while on leash. Pitbull attacked Dusty:

The police get dogs from Seeing Eye. I have one that did not pass his police tests either that we've had for a number of years. We got him from someone who adopted from the police. He's really sweet, but there's a reason two sets of professional dog trainers were not successful with him. So while he was housebroken and knows (extremely) basic obedience and very rarely barks, he would chew up everything if he isn't supervised, he's pretty hyper even now when he's approaching old age, and he's definitely not much in terms of brainpower. It's been years but I believe you can get on the police adoption list or maybe even Seeing Eye, but it takes literally years to get to the top. I would guess that you could do better in terms of finding a mellow older dog with obedience training at lab rescue, where there would be more to choose from.

Thank you for the feedback. I also went to the link that the one of the first PP posted and saw that the ones who don't make it either have health issues or have other behavioural issues. I will likely go through a rescue of some sort and adopt an older dog.
