Dog doing the scoot

Anonymous
Nine year old lab with itchy butt. Took her to the vet about 2 weeks ago for the itchy butt, scooting thing. Had her anal glands expressed. Did okay until about 3 to 5 days ago with more butt licking and now scooting on the floor again. Vet wants us to call if it came back. I am afraid of having to shell out more money for whatever magic they have in mind.
Anyone else's dog get this? What did you have to do? I just want to give her Prep H or something.

Our 11 year old beagle does this. So gross and annoying. Same thing - vet expressed anal glands which we thought was the answer and then a week later we were back at square one. Brought in a fecal sample to have it tested and cut down on table scraps (which is hard to do when there is a beagle + 3 small kids in your house). Still waiting on fecal sample results and not noticing much change in butt scooting with decreasing table scraps.

Would love to hear other comments.

Go to you tune and learn to express the glands yourself. It saves some money.
But otherwise I have no advice.

I always thought it had to do with worms. Huh.

You're going to have to learn how to do it yourself.

Good christ, is there a reason to have dogs at all when you have to put up with manually squeezing their anuses and them rubbing their poop all over your house?!

OMG, I so agree.

Take a fresh stool sample when you next go to the vet. Scooting is often a symptom of worms.

Get checked for worms. But, some dogs do this and you will need to learn to express their glands yourself. Have the vet teach you and watch YouTube for a refresher. My dog was doing this and actually had a tick just inside her rectum that the dr couldn't see on visual examanation but felt it during internal examination.

FYI, express at home, buy latex gloves and some ky. Go gently. Sacs are relatively at 8 and 4. Make sure you do it correctly and not make it worse for your pup.

You can do it!

A good friend of mine does it at home for her Cavalier. She told me to never start expressing anal glands because once you do it, you have to do it all the time.

My cavalier mix scoots every now and then but for her it just means she has to poop, or she has poop stuck on her butt. Once she does her business, she's fine. When I took her to a groomer one time, they asked if I wanted them to express her glands. So some groomers offer it as a service - if you don't want to do it yourself it may be cheaper than the vet.

OMG, jackass, why are you reading these threads if you hate dogs so much?

Go away.

So does poop get on your floors or carpets when she does this?
