Shows to watch with your kids

Surprised no one has mentioned American Idol. That seems like a classic family show.

I'm trying to figure this out too. Growing up, we watched tv together as a family many nights. Now, given schedules it just seems like there's no time at all. The only show we're watching is Star Wars Rebels (which is pretty good).

Would love to get my 9 year old off the awful Disney shows and especially the Nick cartoons.

My again, in the summers we watch So you Think you Can dance. Skill type shows seems particularly good for kids.

We have friends who watch American Ninja, and the kids have started Parkour drop in classes because of it.

WE just started season 1 of Once Upon a Time with 10 and 13 year olds...they love it.

We never let the kids see any violence or sexually suggestive shows at all.

But for TV, we have watched 1 or 2 episodes of Undercover Boss or one of the cooking competition shows. They seem OK for kids to see. They are 5 & 6.

Otherwise, it is only PBS kids.

I grew up on this show and Little House on the Prairie. There really aren't very many shows you can watch with your kids these days.

We watch Little House on the Prairie. My DS is eight.

My DS likes science so we watched Neil deGrasse Tyson's Cosmos. (awesome btw)

Cupcake Wars

Netflix has a lot of family or educational options. I try to pick out a couple of shows a month to watch with my DS.

I let my DS watch a couple of episodes of Once Upon a Time. It's not bad and certainly fine for a preteen.

+1 to Cosmos. Wish they still had the original on Netflix

OP here: I wrote down every single thing you guys suggested. I'll plow through commonsensemedia.org and figure out what makes sense for us.

This is the best of DCUM, IMO

The Middle, Modern Family, Blackish, a little American Idol, Dance Moms, America's Next Top Model. DD is now into Glee, which is terrible.

FYI, Murdoch Mysteries isn't listed on Common Sense Media. Here's a review of it if you're interested:

It's on Hulu or Amazon.

I'd also like to recommend the two animated series "Avatar: the Last Airbender" and "Legends of Korra"
NOT the same as the awful live-action movie "The Last Airbender" that came out.
It's might seem like a kid show (cartoons, right?) but the themes are deep, the characterization is excellent, and the story really draws you in. Our whole family really enjoyed these shows. (You can get on Amazon now). We also got married couples in their 20s and 30s with no kids to start watching and totally hooked them.

Excellent choice. I love it and I am a 50 year old mom.

I forgot about The Amazing Race! We've started watching it with our ten yr. old and she is now convinced that we will be on the show as a team one day. Also love Anne of Green Gables.
