Son broke lamp at beach rental - how much is it going to cost?

Anonymous
Is it a nice lamp or a cheap one from Amazon. I broke a lamp at a rental but found it on Amazon. Bought it and threw out the broken one. They had no clue.

Only if they bought it at Marshalls! We paid $500 for our lamps.

You don't owe a new lamp, you owe the value of the lamp you broke and used lamps are closer to $50 than $500

It's a beach rental. The owners may never even visit the property

They may not even charge you. I broke a lamp in a rental last summer. I immediately messaged the host to let her know and to ask how much I owed. She never responded or charged me.

Beach rental owner here. We too would notice! We do mid-season pop ins and also pay for a quality check each week.
That said, we’ve had stuff break and it’s either covered by the deposit as replacement value or charged to the renter if it’s excessive. When people hide damaged items or throw them out, we have blocked the from coming back. The management company has told us they flag their account and are reluctant to rent to them again. We expect things to break and notifying the company/owner gives us a heads up to replace or correct the situation before the next group shows up.

No one is stupid enough to spend $500 on a lamp in a rental.

And yes a lot of rental properties are decorated with things from Marshalls or (heaven help us) Home Goods. The dirty little secret is out!

Afraid it’s no secret. It’s obvious these places are «decorated» with bottom of the barrell.

Then why stay there? Four Seasons is always nice.

LOL. Right? Not mass produced and mass purchased. Why are some posters so insistent on trying to post snarky when they only come across as stupid? Stop wasting our time.

The poster who looked it up on Amazon got it right. Replace with like, or tell the owner, and have the amount of replacement taken out of your security deposit. Lastly, never take this kind of advice from someone who does not own a beach house, because inventory is taken at beach house regularly. It is part of the business transaction (and also why people don't let just anyone in their beach house, as per another post this week). Some people have an attitude about other people having a beach house

I just bought lamps for our guest room at Target for $15. They match really well and might get used 10 times a year.

No.

Teach your child how to be a responsible adult.

What is wrong with you people!

OP here and they didn’t charge us! Apparently this is covered by accident insurance.

It wouldn’t have occurred to me not to tell the property owner/manager. Who does that??
