| So what is so special about Harris Teeter? I feel like there is a sort of cult following for this place (like Trader Joe's or Wegmans) and there is one opening near me soon. |
| Yeah, I don't get it. One just opened near me and it's nice enough but no big deal. |
|
Clean, organized, BIG, great produce and plenty of organic items. I wouldn't consider myself loyal to Harris Teeters but I do like the grocery store and sometimes stop on my way home from work. I'm definitely loyal to Whole Foods and My Organic Market, but have never been taken with Trader Joes.
You'll like and appreciate having a Harris Teeter nearby. It's not in the same class as Whole Foods but better than Safeway or Giant. |

There is another HT opening up around here - where?
I like them because they have triple coupons every once in awhile (I'm a huge coupon clipper) and free cookies by the exit, but it is not worth the 20 minute drive when I have a Safeway that is a mere 15 minute walk. |
| I have seen TONS of trans fat in their baked goods. It is all over the store. |
|
Like the PP said, they do triple coupons sometimes.
Also, I personally CANNOT STAND Giant. The workers are rude, the produce is nasty and the store is just overall disgusting. So, any options other than Giant are an upgrade to me. And, it's not just one Giant! I've lived in Falls Church and Alexandria and all 4 Giants I've been near have been horrible. The only half-way decent one is the one in McLean. (sorry for the rant) |
The Giant near us is dirty and smelly. A Gourmet Safeway opened near us, it's really nice! Lots of organic, and a great bakery. |
| Customer service is fantastic. I am offered help to get out to the car each time (and it's not like I have my hands that full with my one child.) I am guided to the checkout aisle with no wait. The stocking/produce guys are always friendly to my baby. THere are samples of fresh fruit and other stuff too. |
Hmm.. would that be the Giant on 7th and O NW? And the Safeway near mass ave? I drove by it the other day thinking people must be really happy not to have to go to that Giant anymore. I hated going to that place. There was always open bags of half eaten stuff all over the shelves. And for some reason they were always running out of ground beef. Just weird. |
| HT I've been to is kinda dirty, expensive and way too crowded. They always seem to be restocking so there's stuff blocking the aisles. Checkers are ok but the crowd is pushy and aggressive. |
| The new Adams Morgan HT is a huge step up from the local Safeway in terms of fresh produce, prepared food and customer service. In underserved (by full-service grocery stores, anyway) communities like Adams Morgan and Eastern Capitol Hill, the new HTs are a huge leap forward. But I like Whole Foods a lot better when I'm driving and in the mood to spend more, and in communities with better big-box access, I think HT is less competitive. |

Given the grocery stores in the city, the ones that have opened up hte last few years have been clean, spacious, well-lit, stocked. I was very excited to be able to walk to a full-fledged grocery store when HT opened in Adams Morgan. A few years ago, I was thrilled with the Giant in Colombia Heights.
Before these two places opened, selection in the city was subpar if you were looking for a regular grocery store rather than Whole Foods. |
But it's not limited just to HT - Safeway, Wegmans (especially!), Giant, etc. |
| HT also has parking spaces up close for new/expecting moms. |
| I do think that Giant Food will close if they don't change soon. |
