I'm a white parent with a kid who could have been headed to E-H. Reading this terrifying thread, I thank goodness we have made other plans. As a DCPS grad myself, I am dedicated to the public school system. As a resident of SE, I find it very important for my children to be in multi-racial, multi-economic, in other words DIVERSE, environments. I do not feel the need to subject them to what appears to be setting up to be a throw down when they enter middle school. Reading this thread doesn't make me worry about the students or the school. It makes me worry about the parents.

As to our "reputation," I sent my kids to public school because that's my right and I can't afford to do otherwise. I've lived in this neighborhood for a quarter of a century and care deeply about it. I have tried to do what I could for my kids' school because that's just what you do. We don't have a lot of spare money, but I put in time when I can.

to the AA pp making sure whites aren't welcome at EH: my DS is in an EH feeder school. at least two of his classmates are bi-racial. one has a white mother/black father, the other has a black father/white mother. and that's just ONE class! what do all the other mixed race familes of EH feeder schools do? can they send their kids to EH without you being suspicious of their motives (which i would assume is to simply get their kids a decent public education, but i'm the dumb cracker who doesn't know anything)? do you see how ridiculous you are? not everything/everyone fits into your race box.

That word of "demanding" is enough to sit-off a lot mis-information and mis-understandings. I think diversity should come naturally and not manipulated or manufactured in anyway or form. If one white child attends then let it start there. But, we are hearing that the whites are uniting to take-over the neighborhood schools to get rid-off, change and implement. Here we are all on the same page too but I think the words of discussion and decisions would be more palatable than demand. Don't you think?

I respect the poster whose claim to fame is sweat-equity and said she puts in time when she can. She did not say that we need to rid and replace those who are not of the middle-class tribe. She did not say the only way to educational greatness is to have all FARM students banished to outskirts of Capitol Hill East.

We know that the coffee-conversatons are pretty much stating, if it was left up to some of the residents of Capitol Hill they would take all of the under previliged and established another school. It would have the intials of SWH which would stand for a School with a Hole. Location in the center of RFK field. You know that out of sight, out of mind notion.

This is probably going to confuse my troll of a soul @ 11:24 but I still love him or her.

PP, at my E-H feeder school, PARENTS of all colors are uniting to discuss middle school options. Is that the "taking over" you're talking about? The meetings are announced on all the listserves and on MOTH and all are welcome. Or are there other secret meetings you're not telling us about?

I don't think what you say the conversation is is accurate. Eliot Hine is severely underenrolled and therefore underfunded. The talk is about ADDING TO the enrollment and ADDING TO the academic programming. There is no talk of getting rid of anyone or anything. Still, this is obviously threatening to some people.

Believe me the racial issue is not that hard to decipher. It will all be determined by the child and how he/she will want to be recognized by his/her peers. I have seen it over, over and over again.

16:13, did you glance at the budget Jefferson and Shaw are severely uner enrolled, combined both schools will only have a projected enrollment of 197. Eliot enrollment is showing a projection of upwards but their per pupil funding is not at the level of 18k or 20k that Jefferson and Shaw will be receiving. So, don't think that your are doing us a favor by showing up at the door.
