Do Your Teenage Boys Still Wear Pajamas?

Anonymous
DH, DS 17 and DS 14 all sleep 100% nude. DD 15 and I wear either pajamas or long shirts.

I think it is pretty normal for men and teenage boys to only wear birthday suits to bed. Unless you’re a boy under 10 or a man over 60, pajamas or any sleep attire on guys just scream nerd, dweeb, geek, spaz, dork etc.

Same. Mine started wearing just boxers as a tween, and as an older teen it's his bday suit.

Same with my two sons (14 and 16). They wore pajamas when they were little and then slept in boxers as they got older and then transitioned to sleeping in the nude around the time they started puberty.

+1. Same with my sons (15 and 17).

Do you and DD never sleep completely nude, though? I’m just failing to see why there’s this cultural double standard between males and females when it comes to what they choose to wear or not wear in the privacy of their own beds. I know men who regularly sleep in at least something, and I know women who regularly sleep in absolutely nothing, and I think what the majority of the population sleeps in probably varies based on different circumstances throughout the 365 nights of the year.

I don’t think it’s a double standard. But from reading this thread it does seem like women are much more likely to wear at least something and even more likely to wear a shirt.

I wouldn’t describe it as a double standard though—to me that phrase describes the expectation of different behaviors for different different people given the same circumstances. Other than whoever you’re sleeping next to, no one else even knows what you decide to sleep in—much less has any say in it.

True, but PP opined that boys and men between 10 and 60 who wear anything at all to bed are nerds. That’s an expectation that isn’t also held for girls/women of the same age.

I agree. I certainly can't speak for every one but my impression is that boys/men generally wear less to bed than girls/women do. That also fits with my own family, my DH and DS (15) both sleep in the nude while DD (17) and me always wear some sort of sleepwear to bed.

I don’t know if “double standard”is the right word. But my guess is that in most families it has always been more expected and acceptable that the males will wear less.

I grew up in a very religious church going Baptist family. My dad and two brothers always slept in just their tighty whities. Mom and me wore pajamas. My brothers often ate breakfast and watched Saturday morning cartoons in just their briefs. Mom never cared that my brothers would spend all morning in underwear only, but if I had wanted to watch tv in my bra and panties, mom and dad would’ve had a fit.

My husband and DS always slept nude, but me and both DD always wore sleep attire.

I have no idea what my daughters husbands or 6 grandchildren wear to bed other than 3 DGS all sleep bare chested and 4 DGD all wear a top to bed.

Yes call that what you will but I think your description is typical for many families, at least that's how it used to be in many places.

Perhaps he doesn't want to wear PJ's anymore?

Just ask him if he’d like something like flannel pants, or if he just wants to wear his boxers/briefs.

Flannel pants, fall in the PJ category for me, so that post reads to me like “He doesn’t want to wear PJs.. he’s ready for something else… so I’m going to look for PJs made of a different material to buy for him”.

IMO

Yes the nerd, dweeb, geek...comment was a bit over the top

Same with our son. I can't imagine him asking for them. He hardly knows what they are .

I agree, it is just a personal preference and there is no right or wrong in this area. Wearing pajamas doesn't make a man a nerd, that's silly and absurd. I assume and hope the PP was just joking.

Yes my DS never wears them to bed but loves to lounge around the house in them.

Nah, they don't wear PJs anymore and probably haven't since they entered 4th grade or there abouts.
