Sure you can say that. But almost every other county in the commonwealth has gotten more Hispanic, and Poorer, in this timeframe. No? There still needs to be some responsibility.

Can you post the SAT scores for white students 10 yrs ago? I know they used to have these on their website. Then we can compare it to this year. That's an apples-to-apples comparison. If there really was a decrease due to a "Brabrand effect", it would show up in the group that IS NOT affected by language/immigration trauma/increasing-poverty.

DP - the FCTA has reports from 2017 to 2023, not a decade ago.

2017 was the year Brabrand was hired. White kids scored 1221 on average that year. They scored 1204 last year. Scores went up before they went down as the reports show shows the following trend in the average scores for White kids:

2017: 1221
2018: 1238
2019: 1242
2020: 1235
2021: 1220
2022: 1209
2023: 1204

Scores for every other racial cohort also declined over that period, although by varying amounts (lesser declines among Asian and Black students and a greater decline among Hispanic students).

However, even with that information, your treatment of White students as a proxy for students not affected by "language/immigration trauma/increasing-poverty" may not be accurate, as the "White" cohort could include students fleeing countries like Afghanistan.

So they went up and then, pandemic.

Exactly. As I the OP of the old scores was trying to prove. Brabrand originally had decent scores in the beginning when he hadn’t done much and the policies of Jack Dale and Karen Garza were still in place. But he failed to adopt good policies during Covid to keep the district competitive nationally, and instead spent much of the Covid year virtue signaling George Floyd and a high school admissions process for a school only 1 percent of all FCPS students attend.

Agree how is it that TJHSST was the item on the majority of the Board discussions from June 2020 to Jan 2021? 99 percent of FCPS students don’t attend TJHSST and could have really been helped had Brabrand had not prioritized his time elsewhere. But no. That man had to show his “equity” and “anti racism”

They prioritized some things they wanted to do with as little in-person public participation as possible. What's the expression - "don't ever let a serious crisis go to waste."

Honestly F that Brabrand, he knowingly deceived people during Covid for malicious equity reasons so that he could prioritize and get attention to something that would elevate his standing on the national education hierarchy to cash out. All at the expense of the ordinary kids. But in the end, unlike prior superintendents Garza and Domenech he couldn’t get one of those 500k paying non profit positions.

No, Langley is the wealthiest school, not the best. Generally Langley comes in 2nd to McLean in most measures.

It varies from year to year and I'd expect to see Langley at the top again soon. As others have noted, SAT scores correlate fairly highly with income.

Sure but no one considers Langley to be the best high school in FCPS (not including TJ which is a magnet school). It's either both Langley and McLean or just McLean when people refer to the best Fairfax high schools.

Poor trolling attempt.

In my view top scores do not equal best school necessarily. It just means the students already come highly motivated and have a good support system at home. Is the education at those schools actually better? Langley or Mclean might have five sections of Calc BC, while Edison might only have one section, but the curriculum should be the same. How effective are teachers? How much are the kids learning, taking into consideration what their starting points are.

And also: “Hispanic” does not automatically mean “English learner” or “Low performing”.

They switch places every so often but are pretty consistently top 2.
That’s why when out of towners ask which they should choose when moving in, we tell them to consider their commute, the condition of the buildings, and which house on the market is their favorite rather than worry about the “best” school.

If students arrive in class highly motivated and with a good support system, it seems likely the teachers will be better positioned to cover the curriculum at the intended pace and depth.

Not just their commute to work, but also the commute their kids might have to school.

I bet TJ drops by 100 and the top few behind TJ jump by 20-30, for 2024.

Class of 2025 is the first TJ class admitted under the new system.

+1. My DD (former Langley student) only took the SAT once and got a 1380. She opted not to take it again because she knew she would go TO since she believed many of her peers would have ad higher scores. Many students felt the same way, so it makes sense for the average SAT score to be lower than before the pandemic. I think as more colleges get rid of TO, we are going to see SAT scores go up again. As for the AP scores, she got 4s and 5s, but if the overall Langley average was lower, it's possible her peers prepped more for the SAT than for APs.
