Help me think of backup colleges for my son

Anonymous
DS is an okay student, his first choice college is UMass Amherst (we currently live in MA). I need some ideas of backup schools in case he doesn't get in. A little backgroup, he is an A/B regular class student, has a 1600 on his SAT. Any suggestions I think he wants to stay in New England. He is going to apply to UNH but I need more ideas!

What about the other UMass campuses?

I agree. I am not as familaier with the UMAss syatem, but it is usually easier to get into a satellite campus then transfer to the main campus your junior year.

I am clearly behind the times - in my day, a 1600 was a perfect SAT score. Amherst would be the backup.

My day as well....I think the new system is out of 2400? Does anyone know the conversion? Is 1600 now over 1000?

Same in my day. They've added a new section - writing - so a perfect score today is 2400.

Correct there are now three sections final section is the Writing, it includes a 25 minute 5 paragraph essay. Scored from 1-12. In that section there is also some grammar revision question. Thankfully they have gotten rid of all those terrible analogies that we had back in the day.

I forgot to say that 1600 is really evenly spread out for my DS, about 550 on each section.

No one (except for the test maker, College Board) counts the writing section. What are his scores on the other 2 sections?

Folks count the writing section, it's much more than the essay, which is scored separately from the "writing" section which, if I've got this right, includes sentence completion and usage screening (reading for correct usage and grammar). The other verbal is reading comprehension.
OP, there's a college forum if you scroll down, you might get more answers. My DS is a sophomore in high school so I'm not deep into this yet!

Does he want to stay in MA? Lived there ages ago - maybe Framingham State, Bridgewater State, Salem State, Stonehill, Merrimack. Not sure where these stand these days but they were decent schools back then.

OP I suggest you try college confidential.

I just sent DD off to college. She never, not once, needed the writing score of the SATs or ACTs (although colleges require the students to take that portion of the test). I think you are confused -- the writing portion is just an essay written to a prompt.
