Same with our 12-year old.

+1. I think all of the 12 year old boys are like this.

No, no they are not. We have always viewed athletic wear for athletics not casual wear and certainly not for school. At some point, you have communicated through your purchasing that this is scceptable for daily wear. It may be difficult to change at this stage without a huge battle.

It is acceptable for daily wear unless a school has a uniform or dress code.

Right...just like yoga pants are acceptable daily wear...

Go to the school and watch kids getting off the buses. Your child who you claim "we" is in the minority as all the kids dress this way as it's the current style.

Eh. We have always viewed our 12-year old as being smart enough and independent enough to make his own decisions about what he wants to wear to school.

My techie theater middle schooler has a ton of hoodies but wears his Under Amour hoodie nearly every single day.

Sometimes when he is feeling dressier he wears a graphic T and an unbuttoned flannel over it all.

He mostly wears jeans and sometimes wears athletic pants or shorts depending on the day.

He looks like every other boy looks at his middle school except for the tiny handful of boys (usually new seventu graders) who look as if their moms are still dressing them.

Same. Every now and then he'll put on a pair of Under Armour or Nike pants. No jeans, has some dress pants that he hates to wear. I figure as soon as he's interested in girls he'll switch to something else.

my 12 year old has mostly active wear, but a few pair of khakis. The khaki's he wears most are lined with something that feels like sweatpant material, and they tend to be more slouchy/soft/unstructured looking than, say, the Dockers that my husband wears to work. I think my son's are from Crazy8. Oh, and they are drawstring not button. I would prefer to wear sweatpants or other elastic-waistband pants all day long. However, it is not acceptable to do so at work. I feel that these 11/12-year-olds who will not wear jeans will grow into 15/16-year-olds who still will not wear jeans. They are in for a rude awakening when they get their first job.

I make my kids wear some type of buttoned pants (jeans, khakis, etc) 2-3 times a week. Gotta get used to the real world!

My ds wears a uniform at school, and activewear everywhere else. He occasionally busts out a pair of cargo pants for church an even sometimes puts on actual shoes instead of slides.

It's awesome to be 12 and wear Nike stuff every day! Small pleasures!

My son got his first job at age 15 and bitched and moaned about wearing khakis and a polo shirt.....until he got his first paycheck. After that, he was completely fine with wearing nice clothes to work.

Regarding the moms who wear exercise wear all day long -- your pants say yoga but your a$$ says McDonalds!

Jacket, tie and khakis to school, then pretty much UnderArmour when he gets to choose. They had free dress on Monday and he wore sweatpants and a hoodie. Blech!

In the winter he wears fleece-lined khakis from LandsEnd to school, which are formal enough to wear to school but comfortable enough to sleep in (apparently ...). http://www.landsend.com/products/boys-iron-knee-lined-cadet-pants/id_291950?sku_0=::LHB

pretty much all under armour all the time. but when he dresses up (sports jacket, pants, tie), he likes vineyard vines. he especially likes their bright colored pants, ties and belts.

I agree with this. For my 11 year old it is jeans/slacks/polos/shirts to school and other events. He wears athletic wear for when he is doing athletics or lounging around at home. He has asked to wear athletic clothes to school and the answer is no. I liken this to how you dress in the workplace - it should look like you are coming to work and not to a sporting event.
