Old complaint about country music, I know, but I wish I could listen to two songs in a row and not hear mention of
-dirt roads (always mention that they're dusty) and/or that back road no one else know about -"in my truck"/ "on my tailgate"/ "my truck bed" -"girl, you're driving me crazy"(often because she has red lips and is wearing some kind of little outfit) -singing along to the radio/turn it up |
| ^ and I like country music! |
Sirius has at least 8 country radio channels, playing different genres within country, not to mention the unlimited number of channels you can create on Spotify, I heart Radio, etc. and an infinite number of ways to make your own playlists. If you don't like the new stuff and you want to hear about prisons and mommy shootin' daddy, there's plenty of choices to listen to what you want. Quitchyour bitchin'.

Not sure if this was directed at me, but I want to hear new material. The new thing is artists "following" you on Twitter hoping you will follow them back and buy their music. That is how I discovered some country music that has never seen the light of day on Sirius (google Olivia Lane, that is one example). I don't listen to any other country stations on Sirius other than The Highway, and usually that is a work day thing. They also run a one hour every weekend that is called "on the horizon" that is all new artists, some of which gets moved to the regular rotation if the demand is high enough. I did laugh at the PP's comment about country lyrics, some things never change. |

That may be the weirdest put down I have ever heard. We're not lettuce, we're tomatoes? The lettuce is the most boring part of the salad anyway, who tf wants to be called lettuce?
However after a little Internet research I have come to realize that this guy probably just got in way over his head by trying to relate to regular people through salad metaphors. Having found a photo of this dude online it is clear that he hasn't actually eaten a salad since about 1986, and this is just not in his wheelhouse. http://www.savingcountrymusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/keith-hill-200x200.jpg Dude, next time compare men to juicy burgers or T-Bones, that is probably more in your comfort (food) zone. |
LOL! I am guessing he has been in the industry for a while, so he thinks he has room to talk. Let's face it, the genre has changed a lot in the last 20 years. |
| During my commute last night, from 6-7pm, The Highway and Y2K played at least one Miranda, one Taylor and two Carries. Remarkably, no Girl Crush, but I change stations a lot and could have missed more. Anyway, this Carrie/Miranda/Taylor love has been more my country listening experience. And the (very little) times I've listened to Martina McBride's show, I don't recall her playing any female song other than her own. (Also, random, but Sirius has a thing for Toby Keith.) And yes, if there's a tomato and lettuce salad, you bet I want to be a tomato. |
| The issue w/The Highway is their "highway finds" are more often than not male artists. On top of that, they will play the same one for weeks at a time, when there is plenty of undiscovered talent that has videos on You Tube that could be played for exposure. |

From Martina's FB:
I want to thank CBS This Morning for having me on today. But there are a few things I forgot to say. Being on live tv is nervewracking to say the least. Sometimes you feel rushed and don't get the chance to express all your thoughts. It's really not the tomato comparison that got my attention in the article we have been talking about. I actually thought that was kinda funny. It's the “If you want to make ratings in Country radio, take females out,” comment that was disturbing to me. And the assertion that female listeners like male artists more than female artists. Those are the comments that really got my attention. I feel like whether or not a song gets airplay should be based on how good the SONG is...not whether or not it's sung by a male or female. It's kind of like comparing tall artists to short artists, blondes to brunettes, bald guys to guys with hair....what does it matter? The idea about not playing two females back to back....I get it. If you have less than 19% of your music by females, you want to spread it out. The real point is....why is your playlist less than 19% females??? In regard to the comments being sexist. Hmm...that can be tricky. It seems to me that if a song is not played because of the sex of the artist...it might just fall into the sexist category. As far as what I said about this being a self-fulfilling prophecy.....it's a fact that if female artists start out with this kind of discrimination (I can't really think of a more appropriate word) then it's harder to get record companies to take chances on signing and marketing a female artist. And songwriters need to make a living at the end of the day just like everyone else. They want and need hits. And if the percentage of female hits each year is as small as it is...well, then the chances of songwriters spending time writing great songs for women go way down. I know that the song finding process has been much different for me this time around (I start my new album this week) than it was last time around. There just aren't a ton of great songs to choose from. So....at the end of the day, I'm glad these comments were made and some things were brought to light. If you feel strongly about hearing more women on your radio station I would suggest you let your radio station know how you feel. I've had a long and great relationship with radio for the most part and I have a lot of friends there. (Something else I wanted to say this morning in the interview..). But I think it's time for this "formula" to change. Speak out. Let the programmers know what you want to hear so they can't keep making these assumptions about you and your tastes. Thanks for listening! |
And if I don't have satellite radio I should... just enjoy the corporatized-style pablum? |
You can try -- what alternative do you have? BTW, Spotify, iTunes, I Heart Radio, Pandpdora, etc not require satellite radio. But I know you really just want to complain. Go for it. |
| She clearly reads her some Hax. "Wow, just wow?" |
Yes, you know me. I just don't think it's too much to ask for radio not to actively suck. And I don't use Spotify, iTunes, or I Heart Radio. And most of your options have a cost barrier. But I know you don't think about people with less.
|
Check your facts. Satellite and iTunes cost money. Everything else is free. But complain away. |
| Spotify and iHeart also have apps that are free. I think Pandora does too. You can create your own play lists on Spotify and Pandora. |
