How could they turn her down for character reasons if she works for a legitimate company, pays taxes on her earnings and reports that she worked there? If it's legal, they can't ding her for it.

Yeah they can. Being a porn star isn't a protected class. Hell, even the banks are discriminating against porn actors by making them close accounts, etc. There's such a shame and stigma in being in that business.
No bigger pimps then banks.
*than*

Yeah and some of the biggest criminals run what seem like legitimate businesses. So many people needed to do hard jail time with be fined massive fines for their part in the financial crises. Instead, we bailed them out and they paid themselves million dollar bonuses.

The safest part of this whole sordid affair is that her porn really isn't that good. Uninspired, very vanilla, and she's not actually that attractive by the standards of the trade.

At least, so I'm told.

Cute girl, obviously not dumb, and the beginning of what would likely be a tragic story. Her earnings will be taxable but I would be surprised if anything is withheld, and her paperwork troubles will begin soon. She won't be admitted to the bar unless she cools-off from her chosen market. She seems confused and simultaneously seeks solorful attention and shies away from it. This isn't a train wreck; it's just the beginning of a train wreck. It's unfortunate. And no, it's not THAT incredibly uncommon.

Apologies (this is the PP) -- based on the context and the press, I wouldn't assume that, had she zero educational bills, she might not have considered this particular hobby.

There are tough-tuition stories, and there are tough-tuition stories.

I doubt "porn star" is permissible under Duke's speech code.

Not sure what the politically correct term is?

Good. Another university to scratch off the "to visit" list. Keep those stories coming!

Duke is the only Top 15 school in the south. Cross it off at your own peril.

Eh, can't get with it since Tom Wolf wrote "I am Charlotte Simmons."

Wolfe. Apologies to DCUM police.

I saw her on Piers Morgan several weeks ago before his show was taken off of the air. She sounded surprised that the people at Duke would treat her badly. I kind of felt sorry that she was so naive.

Why the slut shaming? She is working in a legal and legitimate business. You may not like it, like alcohol and cigarettes, but that does not make her some sort of latter day Hester Prynne. And no one - especially any male from Duke - can sit in judgement of her. I would never send my daughter to Duke because of its rancid sexist atmosphere and the "boys-will-boys" attitude to male sexual misbehavior!

I would be more troubled by the fact that Duke's "politically correct" culture and rush to judgment forced the school to pay settlements rumored to be north of $100 million.

If only this were true! Sadly, as an otherwise proud Chicago alum, I have to concede that T. Max is a fellow Maroon. He attended Duke for law school.
