Why are pre-teen girls so mean sometimes?

DD is in HS and luckily has found herway with tremendous self confidence. MS was rough but i told her the mean girls are the ones with the problems (including the mean moms) and today these same mean girls are a mess in HS

girls are mean to other girls when we feel less confident in ourselves, during puberty were completely venerable and society has taught us that bullying is how to handle that
