I do wonder about why it was an either/or thing with Cyndi Lauper and Madonna?

The absence of Whitney and Madonna : the two biggest selling female stars of the 80s is odd

They got the idea from the "Do They Know It's Christmas Time? Feed the World" song. That song was catchy.

Who were the diva singers who wouldn't perform?

The song was recorded in January 1985. Whitney's debut album hadn't even been released yet.

Keep digging, I’m sure you will find racism or sexism somewhere.

Stevie comes off like an ass, honestly. Big diva. And he’s not blind

I think he's entitled. And I disagree.

NP. Why poor Sheila E? Did they tell her she would have a solo? I hardly knew who she was other than as a sidekick of Prince. Seems unrealistic that she would have a solo.

I also thought it was weird the way her portion was done. Lot's of interesting backstory. Calling Prince and telling him he should be there. Then no solo so she leaves. Then at the end she said she got to be a part of a historic event. Disconnect.

Sheila E a "sidekick"? She's a genius.

I don't think you know what "genius" means.

I don't think you know anything about music. Sheila E is one of the most talented percussion artists of the 20th century -- Prince, a musical genius, was in love with her because she was the closest thing he could find to an equal.

And Tito Puente's niece

Another double thumbs up from me. Loved the show, watched it twice last weekend.

I was 15 when We Are the World came out and I remember back then wondering why Sheila E was there. I knew why the Jackson siblings were there (because of Michael) but Sheila...she just didnt fit. Now I know. Loved seeing the old footage and remember watching the awards show that night. Lionel wore me out with that line "Outrageous."

I agree with you, however when the song was recorded, she was still viewed, unfairly, as an extension of Prince/his sidekick.

A lot of it had to do with who was at the AMAs earlier in the night. Some artists were on tour (like Springsteen just wrapped up the day before).

Whitney wasn't even famous at the time.

There is that, too.

It WAS a Cyndi or Madonna thing, evidently. I wonder how much had to do with image.
