Checking your FCPS emails

Let me start out with my disclaimer: my mother and mother in law are lifelong retired teachers. I heard over the years and continue to hear based on their continued connections about how tough things are in the education field. I think schools and teachers are under resourced and underpaid.

Now that we’ve established that, let me say that I work for the fed government. Paid less than the private sector but work in humanitarian programming and am passionate about the work and its impact on vulnerable populations. Do I get fake phishing emails? Yes! Do they sometimes offer cruises or other enticing things? Yes!

What was my ten years of service gift? A pin that was smaller than a quarter. But you’re not going to see me blowing up the internet whining about how I’m SO under appreciated and work extra hours year round on some real crazy stuff and how volatile and insane the whiplash can feel when administrations change and political appointees can be real idiots. And that’s saying it nicely.

Listen, it’s called work. And that’s why they have to pay you to be there.

This lady on AEM seems relatively desperate and unhinged. If you’re going to get your panties in a bunch over this you’ve got some real first world problems.

Feel free to stay on AEM.

As a teacher, I'm surprised by how bothered other teachers get by these things. I saw it, laughed, deleted. I do my best to not fit the stereotype of the whining teacher.

I'm a teacher and I disagree with everyone who is whining about this.

Did I think it was a bit mean when I realized it was fake? Yes.
But that's exactly how phishing attempts succeed and IT was doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The fact that the profession is underpaid and underappreciated is not their problem.

The test was in poor taste and a slap to the face on the last day of school. I’m glad the superintendent sent out an apology email (not that it made much of a difference), and I’m curious to see if there will be any changes to the phishing emails next year.

Me too! The words "teacher appreciation" and fcps was a dead give away.

It’s hard to believe you have teachers in your family.

Teachers are “whining” and they have “panties in a bunch” because of the ridiculously poor working conditions within schools right now.

You made it ten years at your job. Congrats on that pin! Most of my new coworkers aren’t making it to 5 years because of burnout. We had 3 teachers quit in the middle of the year this year. Yes, it can be that bad.

If you don’t have something nice to say right now, consider saying nothing at all. Things are bad enough without your unnecessary meanness.

Haha- no. That phrase is sexist. You can be a woman and be sexist. It shouldn’t be used anymore- completely sexist unless you are also using don’t get your boxers in a bunch (which no one does). It is a phrase meant to emasculate men and laugh at women’s underwear all at the same time.
So laugh all the way back to AEM.

Same. I saw it. The email address or something else didn’t seem right, so I reported as phish and moved on.

Good for you. Some people were offended. Often times when things happen some people are unaffected, and some are offended. You’ve expressed your feelings, and other people are expressing theirs. It makes neither group better than the other.

It was tacky and not a good look for fcps. It got Washington Post coverage:

It’s blocked for those of us who don’t have an account.

Did FCPS IT send a fake email testing to see which teachers would click a link? I’m a teacher in another district. If that was it, I find it hard to believe anyone took an email from a superintendent with a gift card link seriously. The bizarre thing is if this was purposefully created by their own people. I don’t really understand this situation.

From the article:
"The district’s IT department periodically sends out fake phishing emails to test teachers and staff as a cybersecurity measure. It’s a common practice for companies to avoid staff falling prey to phishing, a type of online scam where bad actors send emails posing as a real organization to trick recipients into clicking a link or attachment.

Staff on the receiving end of a test email are expected to flag the email as a phishing attempt. Those who flag the email will receive a response for correctly identifying the scam, and those who follow the link are redirected to additional cybersecurity information to avoid attacks in the future.

Some teachers in Fairfax found the contents of the email to be a bit insensitive. David Walrod, president of the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, said the choice of language on the last day of school — when teachers are already tired — was not a good look."
