Anyone successfully able to stop their dog from eating poop while out on walks?

um... yeah ... if my dog is going to eat poop on a walk, we are not going to walk on the edge.

you're right - I misread the post where OP said "we don't use a retractable leash for many reasons." Somehow I missed "don't" in there. Thanks for making me check again!

Mine has never tried to eat it but she like to sniff it intently which I find gross. I just say a firm “no!” and redirect. When she was a puppy I redirected by calling her to come/sit and then gave a piece of kibble. Basically we treat it like any other object we don’t want her touching/messing with.

My puppy has never witnessed this behavior (I heard dog day care is the worst for teaching this) -- but she is now dabbling with it. I think a special treat that later digested was still intoxicating to her.

With another dog, she discovered a love for #2 after she ate a bag of butterscotch pieces. those tasted good enough the second time around and then she was ruined for life.

Do people not properly leash? If you have the proper leasing you control the dog. The dog doesn't run all over the place. Get a harness and extendable leash. That's best for both safety of others and to deter poop eating.

I believe there is something you can add to their food to make their own poop less enticing, but I can't recall what it is. Pumpkin maybe? Whatever it is, we don't use it anymore because our old dog has digestive issues.

OP here. I heard about this too. Too bad it's not something that's standard in all do foods (assuming it's perfectly safe, of course). sigh...

We do the same as many suggested - lots of scanning and vigilance but he's so darn quick, sometimes I don't even have time to react! And we don't use a retractable leash for many reasons, this being one of them.

I don't understand the retractable leash is the solution to this problem. Maybe take your dog to training? You'll learn how to properly handle the dog. They should be in your control at all times.

People in my neighborhood drive me bonkers with their wild puppies that they clearly don't know how to handle. Dogs should not be jumping on people, running up to other dogs. Poor leash techniques not to mention dangerous.

When my last dog did this we gave her a tennis ball that she carried on every walk. As long as she carried the ball in her mouth, she didn’t care for poop.

Sort of this. Of my many dogs, we taught "yuck" from 8 weeks so never had poop eaters.

The extendable/retractable leash is the worst - seriously throw them out! They are so dangerous to dogs and people. Yes to the harness though, we use the ezewalk harness. In a split second though a dog can grab a gross snack.

You have to put one of those barred muzzlzes over the mount/snout.

You could muzzle but, you would have to work slowly to get them used to it.

Pay attention to your surroundings, ya dingbat

Muzzles are the only way but you have to go slow to get them used to it

So I’m walking my dog along the edge of a park soccer field and he is sniffing the shrubs/grass. His head is sniffing the ground as he is walking. BAM! He is chewing on poop that was hidden in the long grass.

Now how would I prevent that without refusing to allow my dog to sniff the ground?
