Audiobooks - library vs audible

I found that the estimated wait time for a Libby books is usually a lot less. Also, I hadn’t used it in a while, but I started using it again recently to get a book for a long flight/trip I’m taking later this month. both of my very popular books have come up for me to rent a couple of times already (when initial estimates said that I barely was going to get it in time);

There is now an option where when your turn comes up, you can have it skip you and go to the next person, but you still stay at the top of the list (so pushing it out 1-3 weeks). You can also set the earliest date that you want the book offered to you.

I have lots of library cards and will put Libby holds on something using several. When one comes through, I cancel the rest…that’s why the wait is always less. Lots of people like me out there.

Are your cards in places where you live or own property or is there another way you can get access to a library system, and if so, is there a fee to do that?

Some are nearby libraries that have reciprocity with mine. But I also buy into a couple huge ones.

For what it’s worth, Fairfax’s non-resident fee is $27. Queens (NY) is $50. Orange County (FL) is a bit more at $125. Queens and Orange County are worth it because their collections are enormous. If you are a big reader, you wind up saving a lot…and you’re supporting libraries!

By the way, I tell my family that non-resident library memberships are AWESOME gifts for me and I prefer them to Amazon/B&N cards. I DO buy my favorites, but usually from a smaller bookstore that has signed copies.

This is so smart! Thank you!!! I’m in a few local library systems from having lived or worked nearby but had not considered other regions. brilliant!

What library do you belong to? Prince George's County is mine and it doesn't have any book offerings.

+1 I had no idea I could pay a non-resident fee and get access! Thanks for sharing!

PG County definitely uses Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy: https://www.pgcmls.info/library-mobile-apps

Maryland residents can get cards all over the state! In Libby, you load all of your library cards and you search different collections when you want a book.

Montgomery: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/Library/services/registration.html
Howard: https://hclibrary.org/how-do-i/getting-a-library-card/
Anne Arundal: https://www.aacpl.net/books-more/get-a-card
Pratt: https://www.prattlibrary.org/library-cards/ecard
Harford: https://hcplonline.org/digitallibrarycard.php

You get the idea. Just google the county with "library card" and you'll usually find the right page to sign up. The e-card forms send your a card number within minutes!

I use audio books I download and listen to on trips or when I am out walking. I mostly get books from Chirp, the emails I get from them everyday often have great deals on books I am interested in, cost between about $2-5. Occasionally I'll buy a full price book on Chirp or Audible but I don't go on enough trips to justify an Audible membership at $15 month.

I have looked into library audio books and their systems just don't work for what I want. I wish they did. I need to download the book and listen to it when I want to, not within the two weeks or whatever that is the check out time.

FYI, when you check any book out of Libby, you can choose the duration. Some libraries let you toggle to 21 days and Libby will prompt you to renew three days before it's up.

Hoopla gives you 21 days as well.

I guess I'm a faster reader/listener because on 1.5 or 2.0 speed, I'm through a 10 hour audio book in a few days.

When I download a library audiobook, first I download it to my computer. Then I transfer it to my MP3 player. My MP3 player is not hooked up to the internet in any way, so the audiobook stays on it until I delete it.
