Recommendations for Preschool/Daycare for a sweet, loving SPD Child.

In search for structured preschool/daycare that is experienced with children with SPD. We live in Mclean, and DC is 3 years old.

Was your child in Early Intervention? Did he/she qualify for a county preschool program? Even if your child wasn't in Early Intervention, you can contact the school district about preschool.

Dolley Madison is an awesome preschool. They have an on-site speech therapist as well as an OT on site. It really is an amazing preschool. I am sad that they don't go beyond pre-k.

Are you looking for full-time or part time? Are there any other others besides SPD? Are you hoping to find something that starts soon or next fall?

OP here. She did not qualify for Early Intervention. She is currently enrolled in CDS (mclean) and is NOT thriving. We are ideally looking to half day program and the sooner we find it the better it is!

Definitely worth a look at Dolley Madison-warm and welcoming-great teachers and families! I think when DC did OT it was 4,000 extra-ish. If speech is needed that is a few thousand extra. When we applied DC was on a waitlist at first, but you never know-people move out of town and openings come up.

Others to call are McLean Preschool, Falls Church/McLean Children's center, McLean Redeemer Lutheran, Meekins and Vienna Baptist and NVCCC.

Good luck!

GL, OP!

I'm in MoCo, so can't help you with specifics, but moving my sweet SPD child to a different preschool mid-year was one of the best decisions we've made!

We are in Alexandria so can't help you with specifics but we switched preschools for our 3 year old DS w/SPD. The difference has been amazing. He is thriving in the new school. Can't tell you how much the right environment can make a HUGE difference. So please do make the move if your current preschool is not working.

To PP from MoCo. Please share the name of the preschool that worked for your child????

I feel like this is a dumb question, but I'm going to ask anyway. How do you know if your DC isn't thriving in pre-school? Our DS was recently dx with AS and he's in a preschool for NT kids and I just want to know what to look for and how I would know if I needed to pull him out.

Look at the therapeutic preschool program located in the Lourie School in Rockville. The preschool is a completely separate program from the school age program. it's run by a wonderfully talented psychologist, Dr. Venza.

OP here. Thanks for all the recommendations. Also would appreciate any recommendations on great social skills group that is suited for a 3 year old with SPD. She is in Good Beginnings, but not sure how good that program is. I haven't seen any results yet...

IMO playdates where you help facilitate and a loving preschool are the way to go. At one practice we looked into for social skills groups when DC was younger the ss group info said something like ..your kids will turn into appropriate little social butterflies. The child we knew who did the group didn't seem any different though the mom thought it was a little helpful which is why we considered it. When I saw such an outlandish "promise" made in almost a jesting manner..I thought it was insensitive to say the least.
