Elementary School-Aged Kids
|
Apologies if this has been posted before, but I did a search and nothing came up. Just trying to figure out the going rate for first-grade allowances in DC. We've been giving our 6-year-old $1 per week, but it seems like her classmates at school get a lot more - like $5 per week. Would love to hear what other parents are giving their kids. Thanks in advance! |
| $3 a week. |
|
$1 for each year of age, per week
So our 9 year-old 4th grader gets $9 per week and our 6 year-old 1st grader gets $6 per week. |
| We just started - $3 per week for our 1st grader. |
| None, at this point, although I think $1/week would work well--that way he could save up for a month to buy the sorts of $4 toys he is drawn to. As it is, our kids get some money for birthdays and holidays, some of which they are free to use. |
|
We do .50 for each year. So, my 8-year-old gets $4 a week. But only when he remembers to ask.
$1 for each year seemed like a lot for a child, but maybe different people have different things they buy for their kids in addition to allowance. |

$2/week.
If our kids "bank" their money with us, they get interest at the rate of 1%/week. They have quickly learned that saving benefits them more than spending - at this point our fourth-grader (who gets $3/week) earns more in interest than he receives in allowance. |
Interesting idea, PP. My eldest is in Kindergarten. Before reading this thread I had no idea allowances started this young! In terms of teaching money management skills, I am not sure it is worth it to start at that age, but you can disabuse me. Is it also because of peer pressure? |
We did $1, but just switched to a dollar more than your grade (so K = $1, and our now second grader gets $3). This was driven solely by the fact that we needed tostart giving our younger one an allowance or I probably would have left it at $1. |
| I just started giving my kindergartener an allowance of $1 per week. He just spent it on a toy at Walmart. I thought he might be too young for an allowance but when he said "Wow! I've been saving forever and I can only buy this?" He picked out a small dragon toy. I think I will up it one more dollar when he turns 6, etc. |
| Half his age rounded up - so 3 dollars right now. |
| None. |
| My 5th grader, 3rd grader, and kindergartener don't get an allowance. |
| $1 per year you've been in school, so $1 in K, $2 in 1st, etc. We also give chances to earn extra money by doing extra chores. |
| No allowance. Some spending freedom with birthday/gift money. |
