Does anyone have a recommendation for a private art teacher who is willing to travel to student homes?
(We'd like to save commute time / the amount of time my child spends in the car, and so are trying to figure out which of their activities they could do one-on-one rather than in a group setting.) |
Where are you located? |
| Bethesda |
Of course you are. I’ve never heard of a private art teacher that comes to someone’s house. That’s another level of entitlement - your kids will be fine in the car and then may actually benefit from socializing with other kids at the class. |
The advantage of not in a class is similar to that of private lessons in music. Undivided focus from someone who can work directly with the child on technique. The advantage of someone willing to come to you should be obvious. Art teachers get paid squat; I think it's nice to have someone willing to pony up a convenience fee. -- niece of a retired art teacher who runs a few classes and has a couple of private clients, but isn't located within five hundred miles of the DC area, so the amount you'd have to compensate her for travel up here would be rather extreme. |
| An elementary school art teacher comes to our house once a week for art lessons for my DD. I'd recommend reaching out to your school art teacher and asking if she knows anyone who might be interested in some extra money. |

OP here. My kid does tons of other activities with other kids. And for better or for worse, I have a boy, and every art class he has been in recently has been 100% girls, and while he can socialize with girls he finds it frustrating to be the only boy.
Also, he's interested in working on technique, and getting real critical feedback. He wants to be a professional artist someday. |

We have the same issue! He really does love art but the classes are composed entirely of girls. He’s 11 and we have tried multiple im DC and Bethesda. I’m also looking for a private instructor at this point so he can at least do something he loves. |
| Preparing for the upcoming fall - I have a son who is brilliant at drawing and want to give him lessons. Art is not offered at his school. Any suggestions? Did you find someone? |

I would recommend Marcel Taylor. He’s a brilliant local artist who started offering private tutoring. He has a studio in his home, but I believe he will travel. My child wanted to apply to a performing arts school, and Marcel really helped him fine-tune his drawing technique in preparation for the application. He works with both children and adults—highly worth checking out.
