40F. I’ve never had a “hairstyle,” just flat iron it and get cuts at a barber shop (shoulder-length). Only daily makeup is eyeliner. I WFH 4x week and mainly wear Lululemon around the house and running errands.
As I start to see grey hairs come in and feel in a rut clothing-wise, I wish I had a stylist to tell me what would look good—hair, makeup, clothes. I don’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe and had bad results the 2x I’ve been to a Sephora counter (though that was in college, so maybe it deserves another chance). Can anyone recommend a stylist on the DMV, preferably DC? |
| You would need a separate stylist for each unless you get someone who does the whole package. The only person I know who does that is Lani Inlander from Real Life Style. But she’s super expensive. She has an assistant as well but she’s expensive as well. Might be worth it though. Perhaps also try DC style factory. Otherwise for make up you can book a make up consultation at Nordstrom. They will try different brands on you and work with you to show you what suits the most. I’ve tried them and they are great. Another option would be to get a color consult. The one I’ve heard that’s good is District Color. For stylists you can try a Nordstrom stylist. They come to your home and look at what you have and put outfits together. The cost is buying a $300 gift card for Nordstrom. You can then book another appointment in the store to fill in the gaps. I did hire a personal stylist - Style By Rachel. But I felt ripped out. She only shops from specific brands, didn’t work with my budget and isn’t responsive. Perhaps she is good for someone who has an extremely high budget. I did get a few good items from her and she did help me get rid of stuff but I don’t feel I got my moneys worth. |
| OP: thank you for these recommendations! |
| I’m almost afraid to ask, but how expensive is “expensive”? Would Real Life Style be in the $500-$1000 range? |
Hahaha you sound like my old naive self. They charge $395 an hour for 8-10 hours. I’ve heard so many good things but she is out of my budget. They do everything, cleaning out your closet, shopping, trying on clothes, creating outfits, taking them to be tailored or donated. They charge for only the time they spend with you and not for the time they spend shopping or whatever they do in the back end. Style by Rachel charges a flat fee - $850 for the closet edit and $1950 for shopping and outfit creation. But honestly I didn’t think it was worth it and based on people I’ve talked to you can get the same level of service with a good Nordstrom personal stylist (some of them suck). Lani recommended Mary Murdoch from Nordstrom and Maura from Wandering Parisian if you have a smaller budget. With Nordstrom other people with amazing style recommended the following stylists: Ferial Abilmona, Kristi Berkland and Lysa. |
😂 Naive is right! Thank you so much, again, for these details. I will look into the Nordstrom stylists and Wandering Parisian. I appreciate your help! |
PP again. Anytime! One more thing OP. Betsy Fisher has a DC pop up Friday and this weekend. The clothes she brings are pricy but you may find something you like. You can book an appointment with one of the stylists there and have a curated experience. I plan to go because there is a brand of shoes that I want to try that is supposedly very comfortable if you have a wide toe box and collapsed arches like mine Not planning on booking an appointment so I don’t know the process. You can take a look at her website and see what brands she brings. There is a brand - Eric - that is semi affordable. It’s expensive for me but not out of the world expensive, especially when on sale. I plan on checking them out just so that I understand their sizing. That way when something of theirs online goes on sale that I like I can quickly snag it
