White noise machine or app?

Anonymous
The snoring is killing me.

If you use white noise to sleep, do you have an actual machine, or do you use an app?

Any and all recommendations welcome.

I've tried an app and hated it. Two of the important things IMO to look for in an app or machine is that it is non-looping and that you can change the tone to suit your needs.

My son has this one, which was recommended by Wirecutter. He likes it, but to my ear it sounds too mechanical -

I've used an earlier version of this one for 15+ years; I like it better than my son's because it has a real fan and 'whooshy' sound that knocks me out - https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Original-Machine-Soothing-Cancelling/dp/B07NJSDBQ3/ref=sr_1_37?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.K27i2O42nAUl8JwVUipjDk_heBHZvTUxql2IQlB5mxtQSuL_HYSn12_YhzhXmkEqpn8oObel7iHBHh9UhgSN2BC3Vu7xbIxPA4YpIO6pNvefh6RYrPgSghAjLqwre1pQqueu7Cqm_RRSr54jpjchv6dIbDXkxVqtHzbFGQCIyUrwstRqq2bjq9hgd3qUUfP55Ur6wlN-UC7XlidNgZOY7okkJBv545GK_weUG7L8M9gz7euAI-OT1gGcQI2dYMlIXav-2OUOANkmvcD4cnkT9qSYxspNv1Br3dO-68aGQCE.mi-UBU0sxZZ7QluyJ1AB5PPXvEHXf-uRApsIX990MTk&dib_tag=se&keywords=white+noise+machine&qid=1712587886&sr=8-37

You need ear plugs first, and then I'd get a Marpac Dohm white noise machine near your bed.

I am getting this for my kid when he goes to college next year.

Address the snoring first. CPAP machine? Lose weight? Unless I wear earplugs, no amount of noise will cover up the snoring. I couldn't imagine wearing earplugs every night, all night long.

This one is great. Can adjust the kind of white noise, volume, and can make it continuous or like waves. I just set it and forget it, but there are options. No looping, clicking, etc.

That said, I feel any white noise that would cover snoring would be pretty loud.

I like white noise for sleeping so I use a fan. I also really like an app called White Noise on iPhone that lets me create a custom mix - I have rain, waves and lightning. It’s very varied - doesn’t sound like a repetitive loop.

My husband is 150 pounds and has always snored like a beast.

I have a Dohm white noise machine and it does a nice job of blocking snoring even on the low volume option.

Thanks, all, will check these out.

I prefer a fan because it sounds more “natural” to me. Plus I’m perimenopausal and often hot. This one is great because you can fine tune how loud it is. https://a.co/d/ej4PYcQ. That means I can set it low for a normal night and then turn it up based on the number of drinks he had on a random weekend night.

We use a fan, a white noise machine and when we travel the app. Its always the sound of a fan - real or not - that works best for us. It helps drown out sounds but I don't think it drowns out the snoring. If I can fall asleep first then and use the sound machine I have a better nights sleep.

I use the free version of the BetterSleep app but not for snoring. For snoring I use separate bedrooms.
