Thoughts on which inserts are worth paying the cabinet maker for?
I'm thinking it may be worthwhile to get the custom cutlery tray and one or two peg boards for plates/ bowls, and I can separately buy the vertical pan dividers, spice rack, pantry inserts from rev a shelf... |

Get only from them if you need something for a corner shelf or a pull down shelf
We have their lazy Susan fro one corner cabinet and a 3 inch spice rack Not worth it just to organize drawers, there are plenty of cheaper options for those |
| Save money and buy after market based on your needs. I was going to buy that peg thing for my dishes drawer but I found that a soft drawer liner and just stacking the plates and bowls in the drawer works just fine and allows for flexibility. |

Definitely for corner cabinets.
I have pull outs for our big lower cabinets (lynk) and I love them but if you're building a new kitchen you probably have more lower drawers already. |

Disagree with this. Only works if all your spices are in same-size bottles. I cook a lot and my spice bottles are all over the place in shape. I concur with the big, open drawers for pots. |
I was thinking something more like this, nothing needs to be the same size. You can even do a single more traditional sized drawer that’s deeper and just has sides so they don’t fall out, or a shorter version of the picture or a version where you have more space at the bottom for larger items like cornstarch.

I put my spices in an upper cabinet in these little clear bins (or similar, but with this kind of handle). It's really easy to pull them out to put them down on the counter, then to stick them back up there. Also wondering if folks have any experience getting clear pricing for the inserts from the cabinet dealer, or whether you could only get all in numbers that were not broken out. The pricing has not been very transparent to far, but we haven't selected any inserts yet. |

I just got new cabinets in my kitchen and I didn't get a cost break down that showed the up charge but I knew every customization was more than if I ordered rev a shelf and had the contractor install.
That said, there were some things that I wanted just done from the start and shipped ready. For me that was the pullout trash, pull out spice drawer, and a pull out utensil drawer. I'm buying a knife insert, utensil organizer, and tray/cutting board holder. I wanted more flexibility in those items so I can unpack my kitchen and get a feel for the space before I commit to where I want those things for sure |
Did you get a cost break down for anything? We're new to this - want good quality but also would like an idea about when I'm paying an upcharge for something I don't care much about. I also thought a trash cabinet in the design means that it includes the trash pullout...without getting a breakdown it feels very opaque and burdensome to ask clarifying questions about every component. |

Trash pullout if a fairly basic feature and you just need to get over yourself and confirm that it is included. If only to find out how many bins it will hold. I have a cabinet retrofitted with 2 pullouts, 2 bins each: trash, paper, plastic and glass.
Under-sink pullouts are very useful. I also recommend this: https://www.amazon.com/BAGNOLUX-Dispenser-Under-Sink-Countertop-Filtration/dp/B0CGQ1CF4Q?ref_=ast_sto_dp It lets you connect a big bottle of soap (dish or hand) to the dispenser and not bother with refilling for a long time. It is cheap, but a PITA to install, like everything else under the sink. With spices - realize that you will have to either reach up or bend down if you have a narrow drawer. I just store mine in upper cabinets. |
| I got a cost breakdown for everything I bought but it won't show what a 12 inch cabinet that isn't a pull out spice cabinet cost. I could have asked but I didn't care. |

Is this a cabinet maker or a "custom" cabinet line? (Are you dealing with the person whose company is making them or is it a company that carries multiple cabinet lines from different suppliers). If it's a cabinetmaker, the inserts are usually (not always, I'd imagine) a bit nicer and you can probably do a specific layout per drawer -- not a trim-to-fit unit like you'd deal with aftermarket or a generically laid out unit like you'd get via many custom box kitchens. Those still usually work fine and can look nice -- I have a trim-to-fit in one of my cabinets that's perfectly adequate. Regarding pricing for pullouts or components - If it's a cabinet line, that designer or salesperson has to specifically order every component that is going to be delivered from the supplier, from toe-kick to under-skin. As such, that order will have an easily defined price for each item that should be easy to provide -- just ask. If it's a cabinetmaker, it depends on how they do their pricing. My company (different state so not lobbying for work here) factors at least one trash pullout, a blind corner unit and 2 inserts in a standard kitchen. If we're pricing a larger kitchen, we'll adjust accordingly. This type of pricing back and forth can be an anchor for moving a project we're building forward, so we just assume it in the initial pricing and will note if there's a larger expense we see incurring from a request. Not many people are deleting trash pullouts, after all. But we don't advertise, work with established builders and are rarely "shopped around." Other shops facing more competition may feel the need to give a pared-down price and then line-item each addition, else it comes out of their pocket. It's reasonable, but it might muddy the water on final cost, which makes everyone a little distrustful of the process in the end. In reality all of the answers provided by others throughout this thread may or may not be correct based upon your specific kitchen and how much clearance is available in each space. Regarding peg boards, I've stored plates and bowls in drawers for years with a non-slip mat and never needed the pegs, but when we recently got new taller bowls they sometimes toppled when fully stacked and operating the drawer, so after years I finally started to use one single peg. You can absolutely buy aftermarket vertical pan dividers and a door-mounted spice rack (I think that's where you landed in an earlier post), but pantry inserts (if they're pullouts) I would order from your cabinet maker/supplier and have them fitted specifically to the box and able to clear any door or hinge unencumbered. |
