High school sophomore will be old enough to get a job, doing the summer.
We are giving her $20 a week. Is that a lot? It means she is able to order Door Dash once a week. She does do Chores. |
| We've never given our kids, now teens and young adults, an allowance. Their Grandma gave them some money in the past. We pay for all their needs, and some of their wants. They are expected to help around the house as needed and get good grades. They're not big social spenders, so it works out. |
| $20 a week is fine, but if she’s just ordering door dash with it you need to think about her general lack of understanding of money. |
| No allowance for a teen capable of earning their own money. |
| The point of giving an allowance is to teach them something about finances and budgeting, not let them waste it on door dash every week. Have you ever given her $20 and made her buy enough groceries to last a week? |
| We give allowance to teach about money. Once our kids hit 14, they no longer get allowance as they can learn about money via a job, which they are expected to get. We do not allow them to order food with their allowance. |

He has my credit card. Seems to spend about $60 a month which is not a whole lot. I don't know how much he get from his father as we are divorced.
I just know that he is cheap and careful with money. |
| We don't allow door dash. We give money per request/need but mine don't ask for much so it's usually a yes. We either do carry out as a family, someone cooks or they can cook for themselves. At 14, it's hard to work. 15 during the summer sure, but not during the school year. |

$45/month, 15 yrs old. They will get a job next year.
|
| In the Midwest, but we do their age/week. Any work they do on top of that is gravy. They are careful with money and organize joint sibling holiday and special occasion gifts. |
Same here. My kids have always had to pay for their own stuff out of their own allowance savings. There have been regrets over frivolous purchases, and much better those lessons are learned as children with toys and stuffies than as a young adult with a car or expensive clothing. As teenagers, if they want to spend on doordash, that's fine. But they will have to deal with the consequences of not having enough for the other stuff they want. But what jobs are your 14 year olds getting??? My kids put their names in the neighborhood newsletter for law mowing and pet sitting but never get any replies. Most retail places won't hire until 16 at least. I'm pretty sure there are laws (in DCUM region) for that... |
| My old company I used to see $10,000 to $15,000 a month for college kids at Columbia or NYU in Manhattan but that included tuition and rent the kid paid |
| My parents used to give me $100 a week once i went to hs. That primarily paid for lunch, snacks, dinners with friends, any misc thing i wanted to buy. Honestly it doesnt leave a lot over because a chipotle meal is like $14. |
| We never got allowances as teenagers. I baby sat and my brother mowed lawns and at 16 he worked in a hardware store. We never had an allowance in college either or support when we graduated….but we graduated debt free. My oldest is only ten and we haven’t crossed that bridge yet. |
^^^ They did give us money for school stuff and clothes. |
