My 13yo went to his first dance today (Cooper). He didn’t give me any details.
I vaguely remember going to a dance in middle school. I’m pretty sure I stood around with my girlfriends and didn’t even dance. |
| They all jump around to popular music. |
| I used to be a middle school teacher. The kids either stand around and talk, or they dance and try to occasionally grind each other or make out and teachers have to break it up. |
| Nothing. Most don’t go. Some dance but most just stand around and then never go again. Kinda lame nowadays |
+1. They also just stand around. |

My 7th grade, 13 year old's report:
Lots of girls - occasionally a boy or two - dance wildly in a group and sing. Eat snacks. Drink soda. Run around taking silly photos and videos. My son who never stays for the entirety of any event actually stayed and hung out with a couple friends the whole time. Doesn't sound much different than my MS dances. |
When was this? |
My two middle schoolers also had their first dance last night, but not at Cooper. Their reports were basically the same as your son’s and reminded me of my MS dances. Groups of mainly girls dancing, too many slow songs with very few kids dancing, lots of eating of snacks (son) and a fun time. My daughter was excited to go from the time she heard about it while my son wasn’t going to go. He decided to attend about 20 minutes beforehand and was glad he did. |
| They don't do any slow songs at my DD's MS dances, and they have a photo booth, snacks and I think this year a gaga pit. They call it a "social" instead of a dance and I think they try to have activities if you don't want to dance. You also can't leave early, you are there for the whole 90 minutes or you can't go. |
| My kid also went to the Cooper dance last night, OP. This was the report: only a few actual “couples” danced slow dances together, several had their first kiss last night. (many video recordings that are being sent around of these dances). Basically all the “cool kids” boycotted the dance and did not attend bc apparently it’s not cool to go to school dances. I was really happy to hear that because I think it made the dance more enjoyable for everybody who did go. And it turns out there were a ton of kids there, way more than expected, including a lot of eighth graders. I think initially they thought it would be mostly seventh graders. Everyone reported it was a blast, great music, mostly group dancing. there was absolutely no drama, fights, issues whatsoever. The only negative I heard is that they ran out of water bottles, so all the kids were super thirsty when they were picked up. Sounds like it was a very successful dance, and I hope they have more of them! |
Not true. If your kid says it’s lame it’s because your kid is lame. |
| Heavy petting. |
| My son and his friends didn’t go but rode their bikes to the parking lot of school, tried to look into the windows of the gym, got bored and rode back home. This was last year. |
Yuck. |
| Vodka in the punch and sex in the bushes. |
