Puerto Rico or Mayakoba, Mexico?

Anonymous
We are planning ahead to next winter break and have narrowed down our choices to the Banyan Tree or Fairmont in Mayakoba or the St. Regis in Puerto Rico. I have never been to either location and was wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences to share that might help us decide. Prices are so high for the week we are looking that I want to make an informed choice!

Love St Regis PR but I’d also look at the ritz reserve if your budget allows (and if you are looking at Banyan Tree, it probably would)

For us, we are not comfortable right now going to that part of Mexico. Make sure you go in with your eyes wide open.

Thank you for this insight. I've heard differing opinions about safety in that area but I have had concerns.

We just spent a week at the Fairmont and it was glorious. Totally safe and a ton of fun. We did day trips to Chichen Itza and Tulum and felt completely safe everywhere. Not sure why you’d think the most touristy and expensive part of the country would be unsafe.

Rosewood Mayakoba. BEST!

+1! Banyan Tree would be nice too though.

If you’re traveling with kids I agree that the Fairmont is probably the best option.

Kids are older - 14 and 10 - if that makes a difference. We would love to do Rosewood but it’s booked (and likely out of our price range).

We were there with a 14 & 11yo and loved Fairmont. It’s the most family-friendly and has the most to do. Largest beach as well. Our kids loved the pools and beach activities.

Not op but can you share what else apart from Chichen Itza and Tulum you'd recommend? We're also looking to visit that area this summer.

Well there is plenty to do at the resorts for several days at least. Bikes, boat tours, snorkeling, pools, beach, tennis, golf etc.
we did a day trip combining Tulum and the Xel Ha water park which was a ton of fun - snorkeling, lazy river, cliff jumping, zip lines, huge water slides, etc. We had a great and exhausting day.
We did a private tour to Chichen Itza which also included a visit to a cenote and lunch. Highly recommend doing that as our guide knew the right timing to get there before the crowds and heat and we had a blast.

Definitely Mayakoba. We have stayed at rosewood and banyan tree. Both were magnificent.

PR just isn’t the same.
