If your child got a cypher card from William & Mary - is it likely that you will receive merit as well?

I get that the cypher card is a likely letter for admission into William & Mary - but for those who got one in the past - did your child also end up getting merit later on? I hear that merit is not common for both in-state and out of state.

Merit aid is HIGHLY unlikely at William & Mary.

I would doubt it. WM doesn’t give out a lot of merit and I think there are more cards sent out than merit awards.

Not likely - merit aid typically only goes to the 1693 and W&M scholars, and you would have been notified about both by now.

W&M usually dedicates its financial resources to needs-based aid.

Also merit aid is usually a bigger thing at schools that struggle to attract top students otherwise. I don't think W&M has that issue

There are just a few, very competitive scholarships at W&M. They don't give general "merit" awards like some schools. DD's best friend got a cypher card and no award. Another friend got a cypher card and was a Monroe Scholar. The website says these are "the most academically distinguished undergraduates" but it only comes with a grant for summer research but no other money. She went to a different school where she got a big scholarship.

These are the WM scholarships that actually provide a lot of funding:

1963 Scholars: A four-year scholarship that includes Virginia tuition, fees, room and board annually for in-state residents (full scholarship) and Virginia tuition, fees, room and board annually for out-of-state residents (partial scholarship) https://www.wm.edu/as/1693scholars/about/

William & Mary Scholars Awards: academically distinguished students who will add to our impactful community representative of individuals with diverse backgrounds, talents, and experiences. Students selected receive a scholarship covering at least the full cost of in-state tuition and fees. https://www.wm.edu/as/wmsure/wm-scholars/

Is this true for this year? do you know someone who has been notified already?

Sorry should have clarified - finalists haven't been notified but semifinalists have.

Wondering the same thing - 1693 out already? And are RD applicants in this pool or is it usually ED kids?

Sorry, disregard, found info online that RD kids considered. It indicates “February” for semi-finalist notification.

This has already been covered on another thread, so I'm not trying to prolong this part of the discussion but I am curious. What exactly makes it "creepy" in your opinion?

At least some of the 1693 semifinalist notifications are out. My DC applied RD and received one.
