Bar stools with backs or backless

Anonymous
We are opening up a wall in out kitchen and adding a bar height counter. There is room for 4-5 seats. I’m not sure whether to choose seats with backs or not. I’m leaning towards backless to avoid visual clutter and having to constantly straighten the chairs if they are crooked. I also think we will use the bar frequently for serving food at gatherings and wonder if chairs with backs feel in the way. On the other hand, stools with backs seem more comfortable. Since it will be a new space I’m not certain how much we will sit at the bar but I would guess our little kids will often sit there while I’m in the kitchen. Thanks for any thoughts from your experiences.

Go with a low back barstool. Trust me, no adult wants to sit any amount of time on a stool with no back. The low back won't block sight lines, and is so much more comfortable

Get stools with backs if you want anyone to ever sit in them.

Another vote for stools with backs. Even when you have a gathering around your bar, if the stools are there, people will sit in them. Do not assume that everyone wants to mingle while standing.
Not to mention they will be more comfortable for your family.

I would rethink the whole idea of a bar counter but if you want people to sit there they need a back.

I love the look of no-back stools, but if you ever want to use them, get backs.

I have ones with backs at my island and they are very comfy. People like sitting there when entertaining, or like you say kids while youre making dinner. Get ones that people will USE rather than what looks good!

I chose backless, b/c I also wanted to avoid the visual clutter, and that was the wrong choice.

I wanted the clean modern look on my island and I got these. I eat meals on these every day and the seat is comfortable and so easy to clean.

Many counter (not bar) stools that have backs are pretty low - look at the height measurements when you shop.

The stools will be bar height because that is what works best for the kitchen renovation for a variety of reasons. Perhaps in a perfect world and house I’d choose counter height but I’m pleased to be getting the additional space and am excited about the kitchen bar. My childhood home had a bar height counter facing into the kitchen and we used it all the time to talk to the person cooking or help prep.
