This is my daughter 3rd discipline referral this year, they are all for the same reason non stop talking and disrespecting classroom time after she is given 100+ warnings, what can we do? She is a sophomore in high school, her GPA is okay 3.2 and is doing okay grade wise, but behavior is still not there. She does have an IEP and ADHD combine type and is medicated with Vyvanse 20mg.
What can we do? We have a semi -annunal dr app next week. |

What is a discipline referral? Does she have a behavior support plan in her IEP? She needs to be supported in figuring out a more appropriate replacement behavior rather than being disciplined for actions that are a manifestation of her disability.
Doesn’t hurt to run it by the doc, either. |
| What can you do? Therapy (maybe there's more going on). Quarterly or monthly doctors appointments (maybe different medications would work). Get her involved in a solution (maybe she has insight). Take her running before school (to get out the excess energy). Social skills class (this has got to be affecting her relationships) |
| She might need a higher dose of Vyvanse. |
|
Her psychiatrist needs to tweak the dose or type of medication. My kid with ADHD never had a discipline referral in his K-12 schooling. |
| 7th grade girl diagnosed with ADHD in 3rd. Never been in trouble. |
| Three referrals in 4+ months doesn’t seem that bad … I honestly would just let her have the natural consequences. The only thing I would object to is missing class time, but lunch or after school detention seems fine. Increasing meds seems like overkill. |
Hooray for your kid. |
Really? I'd be in full swing trying to get back on track. It's pretty bad before you get a referral. Imagine how much the kid is affecting the classroom and other kids. |
Thanks, she is given fair consequces after school detention. |
No. It's unacceptable. OP is right to be concerned. I hope you figure it out, OP, for your kid's sake. The disruption in class must be significant and socially for her that must have consequences. |
BTDT. To get “back on track” requires the school to engage in effective behavior modification which schools basically never do. And really, talking a lot in one class once a month is not a catastrophe. She can take the detention and learn there are consequences. |
| I dont know what a discipline referral is, and my kids are younger so maybe this isnt relevant but my 3rd grader rarely makes it through a day in school without an incident. He spends a portion of every day in the office. It's frustrating but honestly I kind of thought it was normal for adhd kids to not be able to participate in class. I would suggest just letting the natural school consequences play out and continue to support her as you normally do. |
Declaring behavior unacceptable and $5 will get you a Starbucks. In the pantheon of “behaviors” this is extremely mild. I’d let the school handle it they way they are (referrals) unless there’s something else going on. |
| Never. Diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilites 3 years ago. |
