Begging on Nextdoor app

Anonymous
Last time I used Nextdoor was 5 years ago so I almost never use. I decided to sign in to look for service/trades person but I see quite a few people on there basically begging. They make a post explaining all their troubles and leave their cash app or Venmo handle asking for donations. When did digital begging become a thing?

Not in my neighborhood. Where do you live that it's full of beggars?

DC. I think mine is set to a wider area and not just a specific neighborhood.

I’m experiencing that on Nextdoor and my formerly very focused Buy Nothing group. Starting this fall both have become virtual begging outlets. I’m surprised by the shift and don’t know if it’s something people are being told to try via some other form of social media or if it’s a culture shift.

It’s pretty unnerving to go from the group being about giving away a chair or a bunch of half jars of weird spices to people posting constant asks like “I have two kids and we don’t have Christmas dinner tonight can someone bring me a bag of groceries and sides and a turkey?” at 11 am on Christmas Day.

Yes it’s not just money but things as well. Usually they also have no transportation and would need the donor to bring the item to them.

People have been more comfortable with it for a long time

But when did they start feeling comfortable doing a gofund me for everything? Is there a tiktok begging phenom or IdeserveIt 101? Kind of like the trend where people would stick signs in their cars "Just graduated- venmo xxx money" or "driving cross country, venmo x for a cup of coffee" - ?? horrifying.

They started doing it because people are suckers and actually donate to these things. They see that someone got a few hundred bucks from a sob story and then try it themselves.

I watched an episode of American greed and a woman faked having cancer and raised over $250k. Another story on the same show a man raised $500k for “saving dogs” and got himself a rescue dog….oh and a plane.

Ignore those posts.

They are all scammers.

In MD for example if you type in their names in MD case search easy to see they are criminals.

It is rare a name does not show up.

I hate nextdoor. I look at it occasionally for lost dog posts and wildlife videos (we frequently have bears, mountain lions and bobcats in our neighborhood). If someone asks for a recommendation for a service you get all of these randos popping up saying they can do the work instead of actual recommendations.

We live in DTSS and see a lot of begging from DC posters.

Restrict the geography of the posts you see. Nextdoor is dying and they are including posts from a wider area in order to make it appear more active

For us, it started with appeals for Afghan refugees in need of household goods. Once people responded generously, the flood gates opened.

Same for our. They were outfitting whole houses multiple times over as well as clothes and weeks of groceries.
